Essentially, "Hide in Shadows" allows you to go unseen and "Move Silently" keeps you that way. When I'm creating a thief character with stealth abilities I usually put around 50-60 points into HIS and 80 into MS. Eventually, though, I like to get them both up to 100%.

Rataxes is correct.

Base Percentage Chance To Stealth = ( Hide In Shadows + Move Silently ) / 2

Shadows give you a bonus, sunlight and lit sources give you a penalty.

A little known fact about Stealth is that whether the thief can Hide in Shadows or not has nothing to do with the enemies seeing the thief or not. The engine checks if the *thief* can see the *enemies*. Funnily, this actually means that a blind thief can hide in shadows in the middle of the battlefield.

If you're using Valen, you can use this to your advantage.

Hmm, Does that mean that if I get someone to cast blind on my warrior/thief, then he will be able to hide in shadows just afew feet from that Dragon up north of Umar Hills and then backstab it about 50 times? I might have to try that, because so far I am having no luck on that dragon.

Dragons can't be backstabbed, and they can also see the invisible, so no luck there

Seeing the invisible does not necessarily grant immunity to backstabs. The Minor Avatar of Skekolah is a fine example for that.

Dragons, however, are indeed immune to backstabs.
