Its not just the bandwidth but also the Tgeweb, Domain hosting, Efu Mod, all of that eats up the Bandwidth and the Domain registrations are usually due this time of year.

I know Z hates asking for donations and would only do so if absolutely necessary.

Personally I know that he has invested quite a bit of money into

1. New server hardware (remember the old time out issue...not happening any more)
2. New Forum software

If you have any questions about specifically where the money goes I'm sure if you PM Z he would be more than happy to answer those questions offline.

Cheers!

So wait, the time-out issue was in fact the forums? Ziroc was telling me it must be on my side, lol. Yes, it stopped awhile ago but I never heard any concession that it was this forum...I troubleshot my connection to bits searching for the reason - even called my ISP. Perhaps I missed a post on it or something.

Yeah I was just wondering about the specific bills per se and what makes it all come out to $200 is all.

$200 isn't all of it. Ziroc foots most of the bill... $200 is what he's asking for help with.

So the entirety of the monthly bill is what?

Last year when this donation discussion was going on, it was in the neighborhood of $500 per month. I don't know how much that may have changed since then, but it probably hasn't gone down.

And the thing that drives up the cost is not the speed of the connection, but the bandwidth. All those bandwidth-hogging pictures of some girl beating up on Larry...

Exactly! These sites take a lot of hits and get alot of use. Servers cost more to run than your basic home pc, that's just the way things work.

And as TDC and Bungleau noted, the $200 isn't the total cost of things, it's just what Z is asking for help with.

Just curious, SpiritWarrior, but what internet hosting service to you use?

I hear ya' Cloudy, because I pay three times that with all my services bundled through Cox, and that's just for my internet connection.

You'd have to ask Z for the specifics mate. Maybe if you email or PM him and let him know your fax # he might be able to fax you the bill for you to have a look at?

Personally, I'd suggest the $200 is a no-obligation request for people who have the desire and the means to assist in the running of the site to be able to do so. I don't think it covers the full amount involved in running the site.

BTW, I donated a wee bit, Z.

If Ziroc wanted you to know what his bills are he would have posted them. I guess he want his privacy, heh?

You can do the math yourself. Servers DON'T have unlimited bandwidth. They pay for all of it. Servers use around 100 gigs all the way up to 1000 of gigs of transfer per month, and they get charged for every MB of it.

The way it work is that you usually get charged a flat rate for the X first gigs of bandwith, let's say the 70 gigs. Then they charge you for every extra MB. It's usually about 4-5 cents per MB. I just did some quick math, and at that price an extra 30 gigs cost 1500$. Obviously Ziroc has a better service than that, but as you can see it goes up fast.

And that's JUST the bandwidth. There are tons of other things to take into consideration. Both about the connection and web hosting in general.

I personally do not care if my donation goes to feeding Choc his favorite gormet cat food because in the end, my donation is merely a physical way I can say "thank you" to Ziroc who does his best at not only keeping this forum alive and looking for ways to improve it so I can waste hours each day reading and interacting with this community, but also for his efforts in keeping the Escape from Undermountain mod for NWN in operation. I don't care how he uses it, and would hope he'd buy his wife something really nice for Christmas with it because he spends more time here with us than he does with her, I think...I hope that's not true but who knows? These webmaster types are crazy anyway. Use it for IW upkeep, put it in his pocket...its all the same to me.
