Ya, convex and concave etc. I tried explaining (Edit: using basketballs, oranges, a cat toy and a zippo..) that the shadow from a round object will not necessarily produce a round shadow when cast onto a spherical object but he mostly thought i was full of it.

Maybe you should have used a large flash light, that might have worked better.
