This is why I thought most non-british people might have a bit of trouble. He's a bit before my time to be honest, but he was basically a large cloth cat that spent most of his time sleeping on a chair. Riveting stuff, I'm sure you'll agree.

at the end scooby would take the mask of the devil incarnate bagpuss and lo and behold it would transpire that bagpuss was not a cat but just a poodle that was not getting enough attention

Yeah, but Bagpuss isn't a toon, he is a cloth cat. So he is destructible, however not by Scooby Doo he isn't! And Scooby wouldn't actually be killed I suppose, he would just run away or be badly mauled.
