There is no single meaning to live, every being, sentient and otherwise, must find what it believe to be the true meaing, yet niether is the meaning the quest for meaning (well for me at least)

In the matter of 42 shouldn't we be asking what the question is? for 42 was the answer but it is useless without the question.

No it wasn't, the mice made the machine to know the answer to life the universe and everything but it gave the answer of 42, but it didn't know the actual question that gave it as answer. unable to face the peole with no real answer the mice scienist came up with 6x4 which they thought was too easy as well as how many roads must a man walk down which was too surreal, so the made earth, but the people were killed and replaced by the 'B' class people from the crashed ship, thus destoring the experment and tainting the answer. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

From what I remember Arthur & Ford are on the planet with the 'B' class people and the cavemen (who weren't really cavemen because they lived in huts) and Arthur Dent was trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble. They discussed how the great question may be imprinted on Arthurs subconscious and tried to bring it out by getting him to pull scrabble tiles from the bag at random. The result was 'what do you get if you multiply nine by six.

Of course nine by six only equals 42 in base 13 numbering system.
