However, he's 18, legally an adult. Isn't it trespassing then when it's an adult?

I'm with Morgeruat on this - they were just trying to be good citizens. Obviously caught up in the security hysteria, but still just trying to do what they thought is right.

As for trespassing...all privacies fall by the wayside when someone mentions terrorism or national security

It is because the student was still in school they are all freaking out about it. As soon as you graduate you can write about such things, but until then the assumption today is that "this person is about to commit some sort of violent crime against this school". This is what zero-tolerance thinking will get you.

Technically, an 18-year-old does have an adult level of expectation of privacy, even if still "living at home" while in school. A good lawyer will use this to great advantage.

We are the land of the mostly free, because we still have the plague of the Patriot Act hanging over our heads....
