Ok then. Just wanted to clarify. For the most part I think you're right too.
As...'disempowering' as chivalry is to women, I would imagine the American outcry would certainly provide a huge setback for Zarqawi's cause. And any setback of such is just fine by me. ![]() Or, perhaps he fully realises that such an action would only escalate American public support for military action in Iraq (albeit temporarily), and thus further entrench American presence in the region... which would inevitably increase long-term American casualties and financial expenses. Essentially goading the lion into the pit-trap. Who knows? Certainly not any of us here Although I certainly wish we did. Still, until we all become military intelligence specialists, specualtion games will have to do for now. [ 07-02-2004, 03:46 AM: Message edited by: The Hierophant ]

Theonly thing is...Z and his terrorists (no! not Ziroc) are having their desired effect. The beheadings aren't aimed at disauding or demoralizing our troops...it just pisses them off more...No what they are effecting is a change in public opinion (with the help of selective media reporting) With the Media spewing nothing but the negative reports they are having an effect on the American general populace who's support for the war effort is very important. |

I think, MagiK, that you hold the importance of "the American general populace" in overly high regard. The will of the people always has been and always will be an illusion; it serves only to replace the equally imaginary divine right of kings as government's supposed legitimacy.
Oh, and I can't speak for the Army, of course, Morgeruat, but the Navy has opened every community to females save the SEALs and submarines -- the latter being due to prosaic habitation concerns (the men still hot bunk because of space constraints). |

Tell that to Jimmy Carter, and to George Bush #1, they were both booted out of Office by the Will of the People. I think you are overly cynical Aleph, because if the "Will of the People" didn't matter you would NOT see such a huge effort put into researching "Public Opinion Polls" by politicians...those Polling results cost the Politicians money and they don't spend it for nothing. Please tell my you aren't one of those people who believe the Skull and BOnes and the Illuminati and the Bilderburg groups are behind all things globally controlling every turn of events. Ah, Spam. MMM!
okay, back to useful words... public opinion cost germany WWI, it caused russia to revolt, it cause the communist revolution in china to succeed. public opionion caused the south to cecede from the north in the civil war, it caused america to enter WWII, where before it had stopped america from entering WWII. public opinion sent us to war against mexico after the alamo, and it brought us home from war in vietnam. the support of the public is essential, even masters as far back as sun tzu knew this, thousands of years before Christ.

The support of the public wasn't terribly important a year or two ago... But right now it's critical. And a grisly photo of a woman being mutilated might cost Bush the election.

or it might cost kerry the election...
its hard to say in our society... would the brutal murder of a woman cause outrage, or crushing defeat. after some recent events, i am led to believe that it would be more outrage than defeat, and that would fall as an advantage in bush's camp.

Try getting on the right side of the facts. INDEPENDANT and BI-PARTISAN investigation showed that Bush would have won no matter how many recounts Gore would have asked for. ACCORDING TO THE LAW. Now if you want to do away with the Electoral College system then there will be other things that need to be addressed. So anyway...you have to comeup with a better excuse...please. Public Opinion DOES matter. Admit defeat. |
