From www.bootstrike.com :

LITANY OF CURSES (MORTE)
Type: Special Ability
Name: Litany of Curses
Description: Morte can draw upon his repertoire of insults to taunt an opponent into lowering his guard and attacking. The target suffers penalties to hit and damage when enraged.
Not usable by: Anyone except Morte.
Minimum Caster Lvl: N/A
Ability: Instant
Range: The effect can target any single living target on screen. I do not know what this range translates into.
Speed Factor: 1
Effect: When Morte’s special ability is selected, the targeting cursor appears and the player may click on one living opponent on screen. This spell cannot target undead creatures. Magic resistance does not affect this spell. The target does get a saving throw vs. Spells to resist the effect, however.

When a target is selected, a brief insult from Morte plays (taken randomly from a list of voice files). If the Litany of Curses is unsuccessful, then nothing happens. If it is successful, the target freezes for two seconds, turns a pulsing red (pulsing like a heartbeat, the effect similar to the Strength spell) and then moves to attack Morte as quickly as possible. The number of taunts that Morte has accumulated will penalize this saving throw.

While the target is taunted, the following effects occur:

1. The target suffers a -2 to hit and a -2 to AC and a -2 to damage as long as the Litany of Curses is in effect.

2. The target’s AI is overridden so the target will always attack Morte with a physical hand to hand attack, no matter what. This lasts only for the duration of the taunt effect.

On the issue of becoming LG; t'is indeed vowing that pulls your alignment towards lawful.
You are stuck starting as a fighter; you have no choice (unless you cheat/hack, but I honestly never used any such thing).

Litany of Curses is probably the best special ability in the game, especially considering Morte's physical immunities. How many of the tough bosses are spellcasters (like, all of them pretty much?).

Lawful Good is hard to get and even harder to keep. The Good part is easy enough (it is pretty obvious what is the right thing). It is the Lawful part that is tricky. You have to give your word a lot and avoid lying. Avoid taunting your companions. And always keep your agreements. Considering some of the rewards for straying from the Lawful path, it is hard to do!

It can be hard, yeah - but if you play a goody twoshoes character anyway, that makes it a lot easier. I mentioned I had become lawful good after talking to Morte, right? After that I told Saros in the Great Foundry how to become an anarchist, and that put me back to neutral good again. But then in the conversation with Ravel, I became LG once more. It's only a small step to LG if you're neutral good anyway, so when you're already good and don't behave too chaotically (taunting and lying) it's not that difficult to switch between LG and NG. what exactly does morte's Litany of Curses ability do...
If the target succumb to the full effect of the "spell", the target will switch to melee attack only and pursue Morte.

This is a very nifty skill if you know how to exploit it. I used it to set up ambushes. Here is a tip on how to "exploit" the gift:

1. Find a narrow corridor and set your party to block the path but leave a small gap for Morte to pass through.

2. Get Morte to taunt one enemy at a time and lead them to the trap.

3. Once Morte has passed through the blockade, wait for the enemy close in.

4. Close up the gap and attack the enemy. Repeat until all enemies has been killed. or just select all the members (except Morte) and attack the enemy once he is near.

Oh, do make sure that the blockade is sufficiently far away from the attacker's group or all of them will come at once.

but taunting and lying is what makes Torment dialogue so much better than the dialogue in Baldur's Gate
