It was a great scene

It was pretty over the top though how Gandalf didn't smash into the rocks as he was falling.

I think the Scene with Gandalf contesting Sauruman for the will of Theodin was a nice addition. I would have liked to see more of that particular contest at Isengard...but ...they didn't film that part. </font>
They didn't have everyone go to Isengard so they could empisise Saruman being a dimwad and sending his entire army to Helms Deep, costing him many orcs and having lost all of Isengard to the ents it also shows how kick butt the ents were

Absofreakinlutely. They are the coolest (misnomer?) bad guys ever. Responsible for more elf-hero slayings than any other creature. I think Tolkien had to tone them down because after the first age, elves and men turned into whining pussies. It would've been a pretty one-sided affair otherwise.

LOL, there were only seven, at the most, and that was the last of them. Bye-bye, Balrogs!

Much more than that... and the Balrog of Moria is by no means the last. A few escaped and hid... with any luck, no-one's going to be fool enough to wake them.

Seven? In the Ages of Darkness there are armies of them. Most are vanquished in the War of Powers and the destruction of Utunmo. In the open ended manner Tolkien often chose to end his schemes, it can be summised that more than a handful of Balrogs escaped to the deeps of the earth or roamed to areas where his stories do not go.

If I'm not mistaken Gandalf was a Maya, which was of the same order of beings that the Balrog came from. So they were pretty evenly matched. Plus Gandalf has a Ring of Power and a powerful elvish blade to use. I love the part where he uses Glamerding to call down and channel lightening into the Balrog at the end of the battle.

Given that I have no idea not PJ is going to top that opening in RotK, unless maybe with the expelling of Saruman by Gandalf.

Gandalf was indeed a Maiar spirit as were all of the istari, but in their descent to the mortal world they were restricted to the forms of men and could not use their godly powers to rise in might. The only thing that enabled him to stand against the Balrog was Narya, the ring of fire.

OT, Gandalf's sword Glamdring is mentioned in many places, but nowhere can i find info on how he came by it. Is it the sword of Turgon the Wise?

It was of the same vintage and cache of weapons that Sting came from. He aquired it from the troll horde in 'The Hobbit'. It was forged for the Goblin Wars by the elves, I do not think 'The Hobbit' gives a date on when they were forged.
