Ugaya, I went and re-did the procedure you posted. I found another file I had not deleted, and then was able to install SoA. THANKS SO MUCH.

NEW PROBLEMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I try to run the game, it goes to BgConfig (first time playing). I set my graphics options (same as always), then try to run... then NOTHING.

I get this error:
Unable to Open BIF:date\Hd0GMosc.bif

And the game won't run.

Any help, anybody????

Thanks

I ain't versed on the technical side of the game, so I'll just give this thread a little bump for more appropriate experts to solve.

Bumping.

Again, my error is:
Unable to Open BIF:date\Hd0GMosc.bif

I searched a bit and found out "bif" files are data files. Should I try to find this file on the CD and copy it? Or is a bif file one the changes/rewrites itself over time? Do mods mod bif files? If not, maybe I could delve into that old 2nd Installation I had on an external HDD and retrieved the file from there.

Any help?

Bifs contain the game data, this one (IIRC) contains the minimap graphics for the areas that are installed in every size installation. It should be in your data folder.

Did you install to the same place as last time? If not, part of the game may still be looking in the wrong place. baldur.ini contains some paths, try makng sure those are correct. Otherwise, install the ToB patch, and uninstall and reinstall the entire game from scratch.

No, I installed to a different drive -- space concerns was the whole reason for the reinstall.

I haven't installed ToB yet. I was just trying to get SoA installed an operating before moving on, so as not to compound my problems. Why would Baldur.ini be looking elsewhere on my machine? I cleaned out my registry entries and such, in order to get it to allow me to install.

I can re-install. I have SoA installed, no patch, no baldurdash. Should I use the uninstall utility and begin again, or should I first patch and then uninstall?

I'll check baldur.ini and see what I find. Couldn't I just copy the data file from elsewhere? I mean, if this "BIF" file is not one that's overwritten by mods, I can go retrieve it from my old "second install" (on an external drive -- I just copied the folders and then moded the game).

I have one piece of advice and I am not a computer guru either so bare with me.
My cousin a well versed computer gaming programer for infro grames tells me that
after uninstalling any game with three d grafics or large files like Baldurs gate always...always defrag...... and I have noticed that it helps a lot to defrag frequently between playing....it keeps fle fragments from getting misplaced and causeing problems.

Bumping. Thanks for the advice. My "defrag" is Norton -- and I know not to run it without patching the game first because it misidentifies the registry entry for BG2 and deletes it. I was waiting until I do the complete install I'm looking to do. True, I shoulda done it before installing.

Guess I'll do that if I have to uninstall and reinstall again.

Bumping again. I haven't tried new fix ideas yet, trying to get input first. I promise not to bump this too much more.
