The purists would probably say that you just don't take any NPCs. Not even to say "hi". Otherwise, it would by definition no longer be "solo". I guess I fall into this category, though I'm not dogmatic about it.

Others would argue that as long as the PC does ALL the work it shouldn't matter.

In my own experience I've played a few "pure" solo games which got boring because of the lack of side quests, some "partial" solo games where I allowed NPCs to join only for certain functions (traps, entering the sphere, etc), and numerous "duo" and "trio" games for fast leveling and a moderate amount of dialog/quests.

It's your game, do whatever you like!
