- From the Start menu, choose "Run".
- Type "msconfig" into the dialog box & click ok. This launches the system configuration utility.
- Choose the last tab, "Startup"
- Uncheck the stuff that you want to disable at startup.
- Click "OK"
Voila!! The changes will take effect the next time you start your PC.

I started using Norton Disk Doctor in 1990 and have been faithful. BUt no more, and here's why.

If you do not want to continue to pay to subscribe to virus updates, you will deal with a pop-up every few days reminded you to go update your definitions. This feature cannot be turned off and operates independently of the start menu.

So, unless you intend to buy a "subscription service" in addition to your program,
BURN IT BURN IT BURN IT - DO NOT INSTALL IT.

I have been in contact with Symantec's legal department regarding their falsely advertising a subscription service as a software program.

Well Norton programs have their own off switch. Open up Norton Utilities Integrator and select 'options'. The click the tab 'startup' and uncheck the boxes.

Timber, didn´t my tip get rid of those pop-ups? You know, options-->miscellaneous-->uncheck alert on startup if virus protection is out of date.

Personally I found it quite useless. I have NAV 2003 and Firewall 2003 as well, but as for Utilities, I found them all pretty much useless under XP.
XP is continually rearranging files on the disk to save application load time, so speed disk actually works against XP in this regard.

All you really need is Norton Antivirus and a good firewall. Forget about all the fancy bells and whistles, they don't work.

No. Still comes up. I took the whole damned thing out of startup mode - let's see if that works. I think it is completely independent of these features though. At least that's what their help line (email only - THOSE BASTARDS) and my experience tell me. Do you have NAV 2002 and did it work for you?

Hmm not anymore. I never tried that feature since I was able to upgrade the definitoins manually from the Symantec website. I now have 2003 installed. I think it´s the same with that though.
