Lord Brass, what the heck is this "Tenser's" stuff? BG2?
And the damage increment on Missile weapons is determined by your dexterity, not your strength, so the Gauntlets of Ogre Power would make absolutely no difference (Leaving aside the fact that Mages can't wear those Gauntlets anyway). Did you mean the Gauntlets of Weapon Skill/Expertise?

Six, you're right, Tenser's Transformation is in BG2. It is also available in BG1/Tales with Dark Side installed.

Great. So now I gotta go download Dark Side to find out just what the heck it is, huh? (Not that I wasn't going to download it eventually )

Be advised that Dark Side is a bit buggy. I have found it frequently crashes when an enemy approaches upon first entering a new map--about half the time only to the desktop, thank goodness. But the whole slew of BG2 caliber spells and weapons make it well worth it, as far as I'm concerned. You have to start a new game to play it. You can download it from http://www.dsotsc.com/index1.shtml (I'm having a grand time playing party of paladins with DS, but I'll shut up about that already, lol.)

Am I missing the point here? Why is not being able to learn a spell so important. I have just dual-classed my Fighter to a Mage, so of course I can't have more than a couple of spells anyway BUT I do have useful Spells like Magic Missile and Armour in my Quick Slots and a handful of Identify scrolls in my Inventory, just in case a really nice item turns up. So surely a Conjurer, of any level, can take a few Identify Scrolls in his pocket, to avoid those long trips to the shops.

I'm a bit new to this Dual-Classing thing, but it pains me to see my once great Fighter reduced to walking around in her swim-suit, throwing rocks at Ogres and the like!

That's a good point Midget Gems. Identify scrolls cost only 50 gp, IIRC. However, I'm pretty sure there is only a limited number of them in the stores, and of course there's tons of unIDed stuff throughout a game. If you have a bard in the party it's not as much of a problem since very soon they are able to ID nearly everything. So for me, a conjurer is good so long as you have a bard.

I know the feeling...that's one of the things I ALWAYS use Gatekeeper for--I HATE having a Mage who looks like a Thief or a Fighter! Change my Appearance to Mage, if you please, so I don't look like I'm tromping around the Sword Coast in my pajamas.

Yep, quite right Six'. I do mean those gauntlets - I was thinking of a previous post.

As for Tenser's Transformation, it was an original 1AD&D PnP spell that was never really meant to see the light of (high level) day. The reason for it, and trust me I know as I've used it, is that you get converted to a fighter of the same level as your mage, and you double your HP! The only issue after that is that you cannot cast spells until it wears off. Mind you, and some will disagree, if you think it's a cure-all, you'll get three feet of rusty metal applied to your bonce to prove you wrong.

Remember: Tenser's, like Haste, can seriously damage your health if used too much.

This is sort of true, as I know I'm tempted to cast it and run in when things get hectic. This invariably leads to my mage running around with the bad guy(-s) chasing him/her. Still, that does leave my cleric free to heal up the others . So there is a real benefit to it after all.

Aha... that is Tenser's allright. It fits the personality of my Necromancer perfectly. When things get ugly, he just lets go and starts whacking everything in sight, hehe...

Anyways, it is not just that. As I previously posted, there are a couple more spells that help the mage become (sort of) a fighter. And most of them last for a long time (Strength= 1h/lvl, etc). I cant remember exactly without my char in front of me but I manage to get him to around 120hp, 5Thaco, -5AC, and damage in the whereabouts of 20/30 per hit when in "warrior mode".

Of course, I dont do this all the time. He IS a mage after all. But it is useful and fun when you just dont want to stand back and throw spells or let others do the dirty work for you.
