HOLLIOAKE DIES IN CAR CRASH England cricketer Ben Hollioake has been killed in a car crash, driving in Perth, Western Australia. He was the driver of a Porsche sports car which came off the road and hit a brick retaining wall. A female passenger is fighting for her life in a Perth hospital. The 24-year-old Surrey all-rounder, who was visiting his parents in Perth, was born in Australia but moved to Britain in 1984. He was part of the England one-day squad in India and New Zealand this winter. He is the second Surrey player to be killed in a car crash in the last five years following the death of Graham Kersey in a similar accident outside Brisbane in December 1996. The tragic accident ends a brief but promising career for the talented all-rounder, who made a brilliant impact on international cricket on his one-day international debut against Australia at Lord's in 1997 when he hit 63 runs off 48 balls. That success prompted the selectors to make Ben and 30-year-old brother Adam made their Test debuts for England in the same match later that summer against Australia at Trent Bridge. But despite a successful A tour to Kenya and Sri Lanka the following winter and selection for the Ashes tour in 1998-99, Ben struggled to continue his development and made only one more Test appearance against Sri Lanka in August 1998. His one-day international career was similarly fragmented, and he had a two year gap between appearances before being recalled for last summer's triangular series against Australia and Pakistan. He was such a success last summer that he earned a call-up for this winter's one-day tours to India and New Zealand, but a knee injury limited his appearances to only three. This is very saddening to cricket fans around the world, Englishmen, well, in fact, everyone. He was 24, and was once heralded as the next Ian Botham. May everyone's feelings go out to his family, his teammates, and his brother who he was especially close too. RIP Ben,and may your soul play cricket forever in heaven.
