has anyone had this problem when i activate the map (by tab or by clicking on the radar screen) it seems to take forever to come up.
the rest of the game plays fine no slow downs-kick outs-black screens or any thing.
is it just me?

unfortuantely, joe, it's not just you. the maps can take quite a long time to load the first time - in particular, the arnika-trynton road is a whopper.

on the bright side, after you get it loaded once, if you need to open it again during the same trip it comes up faster thereafter.

What Sultan means by "same trip" is since last you opened the game session on the computer. I don't even bother with the Trynton-Arnika after the cemetery is done. On my Pent. II it seems to take about 10-15 full minutes! The Swamp on the other hand goes up like a breeze.

That's a very long time, Wild Rose.
With my older computer ( P2, 300 MHz , 128 MB RAM ) it took about 3 minutes to load a full map of Arnika-Trynton Road the first time. I had some of the options deactivated, but 10 to 15 minutes ? I think, with that loading time for maps, the game hadn't survived a week . Don't know what, but it seems to me that something is wrong there.
Or do you have an older Compy than me ?

My P2, 800 MHz, had a significantly reduced load time for all areas and maps when I doubled the RAM. Arnika-Trynton takes about 2 min (haven't timed it). Some areas are quick, depends on how much detail is in the zone I suspect. It may be graphic card-related as well. Not an expert on the subject.

I seem to recall hearing that if you change the rendering to OpenGL the maps come up a lot faster. That being said, when I tried OpenGL mode on my system it wouldn't work at all.

when i ran it in open gl the whole game ran much slower, and the screen was divided into 9 boxes. I didnt test the map loading time though. I think that is a function of ram

I'm using OpenGL as I got fed up with the long map loading times. The black grid is a bit annoying, and the red dots are a lot harder to see on the map, but I do't find it runs any slower, and I save time on the map loading!!

500 MB should be more than enough.

Do you run the unpatched version? Map loading was much slower in that version than in current one (although only maybe 4 times as long)
