In my current game I'm planning to form the Umpani-T'rang alliance but I've run into a large snag. I visited the Umpani first, completed basic training then agreed to find proof of T'rang being on Dominus. I then headed south and entered Marten's Bluff then agreed to work with the T'rang. I gave them an Umpani flag that I found earlier then went to do the second quest on the list. I went back up and used the perfume on the Rapax dummy, when the real Rapax came in I turned him into a Rapax pancake. I grabbed his head and went back downstairs. As soon as I talked to the head T'rang though he calls me a spy and attacks.

After scratching my head I remembered that He'Li will demand money from you so as not to tell the T'Rang or Umpani that you are working for both of them. I hiked all the way back to Arnika and paid her off then hiked all the way back to Marten's Bluff and spoke to the head T'rang again. The same thing happened.

Did I forget something or do something out of order? I could have sworn you could work for both sides up until one asks you to take action against the other. I'd rather not have to restart the game and even if I did I'm not sure what I did wrong.

hiya holywhippet - this has come up a few times before, although i dont recall ever coming to a conclusion on what "one" trigger there is for it. in other words, it appears there are a number of possible reasons it can happen, including the heli trigger you mentioned. perhaps some others may have more specific ideas they can offer... alternately, try searching using the IW search function - it's quite excellent.

as for a work around, i have heard mention that you can use the item and click directly on z'ant (the head trang) with it, in order to avoid having him go hostile. so, using raven's head for example, grab it in your inventory, click in the bottom right corner to leave the inventory (with the head still on your cursor), then click on z'ant. he'll accept the head and take you through the rest of the dialogue....

I'll give it a try, thanks.

*Update*

It worked! Now hopefully it won't trigger again later for either the T'rang or the Umpani.

There's no need to pay off He'Li unless you talk to her and she demands money. I always avoid her myself after I start working for both sides.

It IS odd about Z'ant catching on to you so soon. Your route is about the same one I take through the game, and only once (a very long time ago) was I ever caught out by the T'rang. In all other instances, neither side found me out and I was able to bring about the alliance.

It's been ages since my last game (when I formed the alliance) but I am fairly certain I'm still following the normal path. I was really surprised when he caught me out, it had simply never happened last time. I'm wondering if it's a bug or if there might be some random element to it.

I'd heard about that but never been sure what I could do about it. What would I need to do to stop him reporting on me?

In my experience, it's a complete random thing. I have my usual route, doing the things in the same order, and in game #15 and 16 out of 20 (or something like this) i was accused to be a spy. (It has been more games by now, but since #20 i only enter the dialog by giving an item)

You hope it won't trigger again? As far as i know, it is triggered now. It will happen every time when you try to talk to z'ant the 'normal' way. From now on, always enter the dialoge by giving him a quest item (damaged black box works for coordinates mission).

You can always kill him, after you got all his good items off him.

At the end, you can turn Kunar in as a traitor. After you get the phrase from Z'Ant and tell it to Kunar, he gives you a fake pass. Go to Balbrak, talk about Kunar, and type in "traitor" when Balbrak asks "what about Kunar?". Then give Balbrak the fake pass. End of Kunar

P.S. If you have someone with very good pickpocketing skills, you can nab Kunar's Key. It opens the door behind him and in the room is a one-way teleport to Martin's Bluff. Save first, because it will take several tries before you get the key.
