Cheers!
Is there just the two of them or is it a whole series?
What was wrong with the combat sequences?
What's with the 20 questions? ah...oops!

I'm on book 2 now out of I'm not sure how many. I do like the combat, she is descriptive and everything I just thought it a little unrealistic that a large group of disciplined enemies caused barely an injury yet all died, that kind of thing. However I can overlook that, I did buy book 2 after all!

Ok I recently read George R. R. Martins a Game of Thrones and well Im not quite sure if I really liked it or not, let me elaborate. Ill mention things im not really certain about first.

The charecters, main problem hear is there are very few likable ones for me it was Tyrion the funny dwarf or Jon Snow the guy on the wall they were both brilliant but everybody else was either boring or you hated them. I have to say all the charecters were all very good, as in they were developed with light and dark to them but the fact that the good charecters are written about far less is a major problem I have. There is no evil in the book just twisted people while this may be true of the real world in a very political fantasy book its tiresome sometimes. I would advocate deep charecters like this but you have to get to the point as well. Its contemporys would be say the farseer trilogy and perhaps the wheel of time. The farser charecters were better and all the books had growth, I know ive only read one of the fire and ice books but at the end of assasins apprentice I can say the charecters were better but there were less of them.

Ok the plot, it was very deep and complicated and hard to predict sometimes and everyone in the book was focused on the current conflict(minus 1 charecter Daenerys who will probably show up later) so you cant say it ever lost focus, the inevitable but comes now, but at the end of the book I didnt really care how things were turning out in the conflict(I am saying conflict BTW to avoid spoilers). This had to do with the charecters I mentioned not being likable, Id say the most talked about charecter Eddard was completly boring in the intriuge he had to carry out, he was too innocent and trusting so you got tired of watching him fumble, coming back to the farseer books again its closest match, I wanted Chade to do it , I wanted someone capable not Mr oh Im a good person and I m sorry you all have to smack your head in frustration over my ineptness. Eddard should be in wars there hed be great and tragic as opposed to finally figuring it out in the moment of doom. The plot was good but its main problem was it didnt make me care.

Magic another thing that can bring up the standard of a novel, most of the time magic dosnt come up in the book apart from certain swords so its oldfashioned politics the whole way. I am expecting great things though, Im referring to what Jon Snow is guarding against on the wall the time the Others attack is brilliant its very the white foxes in the Memory, Sorrow, Thorn books if you know what I mean. Very mysterious so things can only improve there.

In the end it is a vey readable book very graphic, descriptive and tense but hamstrung by a few niggles that I have no doubt will be worked out. It can be an effort to get through but its probably going to be worth.

A long post that.

Hey Jabidas!
Thanks for posting! That obviously took a bit of time to
write. You do very good reviews btw.

I have not read Game of Thrones but I have read George R.R. Martin,
A comic book called Sandkings an adaption of one of his books.
It was all right. A dude who lives in the same house as me, different
unit though, just read this same book as you. He enjoyed it i think
a bit more than you I think cause he had some more praise for it...but I did notice that he made some of the same points about the characters and there respective showing of alignment.
I can't comment properly since i have not read it, but the way you describe
the magic in the book is interesting. Is it like Lotr where magic is
brutally powerful but seldom used or seen, yet always there too? In fantasy books it has always been my approach that sorcery is an immensely powerful force and not to written about lightly or flamboyantly. In writing i guess
it's just a means to an end but still...

Thanks Djinn I was half afraid nobody would notice it and now I feel vindicated.

Ok your question magic dosnt come up a lot and its only really involved with 2 charecters so far but the nature of the storyline means it will become more regular. While it is very interesting in the book, in future books is where it will really shine.

Oh BTW in case anyone gets the wrong idea I really liked the book and it was very well written, I just had too many reservations to fall completly in love with it.

I enjoyed Throne of Kings, although Jabidas had some good points. My main problem is there are so many characters that when you finish and have to wait a year and a half for the next book it tkaes forever to remember whois who/doing what/why they do this/etc. So when the next book comes out I plan on re-reading the whole thing just so I can have "continuity" all freshly in my head.He is a top notch writer though and I have a couple other books by him that are good.

Djinn, I read Endymion which I thought an incredibly good book, but the second book was kind of boring IMO. Is the third better?

OK, see you in about three years Djinn!! Oof! My hat's off to you if you manage to understand a single line of Dubliners
And TOB as well...guess we'll be seeing little of you then
I went bookshopping the day before yesterday and since I'd just been visiting German family,I decided to read some German again I really love that language (I know most people don't, but they never really listened well they just imitate others who are in turn influenced by the war history and start jabbering about how German is such a harsh, guttural language...it's NOT! Anything but that! It's actually pretty soft, with soft-sounding liquid consonants) <<< Now can someone tell me how I always manage to squeeze in a big angry unrelated rant in the last line of my post??
