I sit possible to get into the ice palace without going past Sherincal, and if so, how?

Yes. If you have halflings, gnomes or dwarves, you can enter through the side. The entrance is guarded by a Crystal Golem. Using the stairs, I think it's even possible to completely go around Sherincal.

that isn't the one I was thinking of, there is another way, but I've never played with any of teh "short folk" beofre...
So I'm going to have to ask for other people to say "yes" or "no" on this one I'm afraid.

You can ask the gnome you free from the remorhaz to sneak through the passage if you've seen it.
