A prequel would ruin it for me. I want the game to be a sequel of some sort that I can play the same character from BG and BGII. Doesn't have to be about Bhaalspwan, I just want to play my character.

That would be rather stupid; your character is either a god, or a mortal with extremely godlike powers

This sequel would assume that the Bhaalspawn gave up his or her essence, much like BGII assumes that you took Minsc, Dynahier, Jahiera, and Imoen into your party.

I don't see how the Bhaalspawn has extremely godlike powers if he or she gave up his or her essence.

Hell, it might be cool that if one did choose to become a god, then for some reason or another, he or she is made to assume physical form like the deities during the Time of Troubles.

You're still a 40th level character after you give up the essence; that would be pretty godlike, given that Jon Irenicus was a 29th level mage.

Well then I am sure adjustments could be made 8) Maybe you're set in the Abyss facing the evil powers?

Remember you already faced Demogorgon and won (if you fought him, that is). And he's a Prince of Demons for god's sake Okay, so you won't defeat Asmodeus just yet, but you're close at the least.

EDIT: And adjustments? In the line of "hey I lost my powers somehow.. how could this be?"

A few years back, one of the scenarios discussed involved you playing a son or daughter of your previous character and his/her love-interest (okay, some of the races will be somewhat of a stretch, like a half-orc or a gnome child, but I'm sure we'll think of a way to bypass that ). I'm not sure how much attention will be spent on details in BGIII, but it would be great if on your travels through the realms you come across all kinds of easter eggs and clues of what happened to your father/mother 25 years beforehand. Sure, for a veteran BG-player, the storyline would most likely be somewhat spoiled and predictable either way; but one could probably still get a kick out of "getting" all the sneaky references to the previous BG-titles, as well as cameos of old characters, resurrected old friends and foes, and seeing how certain places have changed in the past few decades. And perhaps you could import your old character beforehand and have it appear in flashbacks, dream sequences and perhaps even the final battle (either as an ally or an enemy, depending on the choices you've made along the way), who knows.
Of course, BGIII is probably not going to be anything like that, and we'll probably get stuck with some dissatisfying Diablo-clone , but there's nothing wrong with wishful thinking, no?

Perhaps by losing one game too many of the Deck of Many Things? Stripping him of all his powers?
And if we have him lose his memory at the same time, maybe we could call it Baldurs Gate: Torment.
