Intellectual Property Rights

Can anyone recommend a website that details what rights an author does and does not have relative to the use of his intellectual property by a website?

In particular, if an author provides content to a website as an unpaid volunteer, does that content become the property of the website or does he retain the rights to that content.

Any links that might help me research this issue would be immensely appreciated.

PS: THis query is NOT related in the least to Ironworks. LOL It's an external issue. Just thought that people should know that.

One of my customer's in an intellectual property law firm. I'll see if I can get an answer from them...

The scary thing is, I just emailed her before I read this.

I suspect that it may depend on the T's and C's of the web site.

If they state there that all posts become property of the web site, or some such equivalent, then you're fresh out of luck.

Here's the text from a professional group I'm involved with:

Check to see what terms may exist.

This is sole paragraph that applies:

The copyright for any material created by the author is reserved. Any duplication or use of content such as diagrams, sounds or texts in other electronic or printed publications is not permitted without the author's express permission.

Note that the phrasing refers ONLY to the "author" of such content and not to the website or administrator.

I think they MEANT to but they worded it badly. LOL

Hopefully that will give me the legal in I need.

I guess I should have been more careful but who knew the site admin would turn out to be such a flipping prick.

You might want to print out or email yourself a copy of that... wouldn't take them much effort to change things, would it?

DUDE! Awesome suggestion.

I just grabbed the text and am trying to get a screenshot as well.

Having trouble taking a screen capture on it though. Any suggestions?

Press "PrinScr" (key above Insert), open MSPaint and select "Edit" -> "paste". Then save the file somewhere. I'm not sure if screenshots are admissible in court, though. In any event, google cache and/or archive.org should have backups of the site on which you could fall back on.
