4th edition dnd

I dont see a thread about this yet and im curious what other gamers think of the rule changes. I bought the PHB today and skimmed through it, and the game seems ridiculous to me. If I'm understanding the mechanics right, then every character has special abilities that can be used every battle, and some of them multiple times per battle. Seems like overkill to try and make the game flashy or exciting.

That being said, the artwork in the book looks great.

..havn't looked at it yet, but heard a little bit. We still use 2nd ed. with a bit of third mixed in. Meaning that the the DM has thrown in a few feats for us to pick from.

I haven't had a look at it yet either (although the DM has bought a copy, he is half a country away at the moment). What I have heard about it doesn't impress me, but I am waiting till I have a proper look before I decide.
(We usually use 3rd ed. or 3.5 around here.)

i kinda know baldurs gate is 2nd ed and NWN is 3rd ed. so whats special on 4th ed?

I've had a quick look at it (the DM turned up briefly) and I don't like what they have done with alignment for a start. I'm also not sure I like how some of the core classes and races have been removed. There also doesn't seem to be racial level adjustment, which could make things... Interesting.

It's been horribly dumbed down, stick with 2 or 3e IMO,
4th is horrible.

My FLGS is very active and robust. The owner/operator has run every edition of D&D for many years and countless sessions. When I returned to the game (only played 1e; never 2e) and I was trying to figure out the mechanics for 3xx he explained it as well as demonstrated.

I recently talked to him about 4e and the mechanics/game play. He told me straight up, "It is a brand new game. It is nothing like the previous editions."

So it looks like we will stick with 3xx from here on out. If there is ever a Baldur's Gate 3 it is going to be based on edition 4, unless 4 just tanks which will bring an interesting fallout to say the least.

I heard a little about 4th ed, but have no idea what it really presents to game play. I'll have to Google it in a minute and see if I can get the jist of its horror. From what I have heard here and other places...especially from the standpoint of FR novels being written in the future with 4th in mind...I will probably be very upset at what I discover.

It's terrible, there are things like "daily powers" that your class can use once a day. Much of the advanced rules have been stripped down, it is not a streamlined version like 3e was from 2e, it's a more basic ruleset. It plays like an MMO, with cooldowns on powers etc. Weird. They think by doing this it would attract more kids I guess.

Here is a sample character sheet I found online. I am still browsing through sites and trying to understand the concepts...and looking for people's opinions.
