fission slimes

I'm in Durlag's Tower and can't seem to kill the Fission Slimes. I hit them with fire then attacked with weapons, it died then then there were 2. I used just fire spells(fireball, necklace of missles, wand of the heavens to kill it and they just split again. how do I kill these things?

You need to kill them with special damage type in order to prevent them from multiplying. If you want you can try and figure it out yourself, or check the spoiler below for the answer.

You have to kill them with fire. You wrote in your post that you used fire on them already, but in order for it not to multiply the killing blow has to be done with fire.

I only used fireballs and they died but kept splitting. I can't get past this room to get to level 5

That's... strange. I remember from my own experience it's fire. And I just checked a couple of walkthroughs and they all say fire.

Is your AI on? Maybe someone is automatically attacking the slime with weapons?

I only used Dynaheir to cast fireballs. Imoen was hiding in the shadows to direct fire. It took 4 fireballs to kill the slime and then there were 2 uninjured ones to take it's place. I looked at the walkthroughs too.
