Default Shampoo Debate Revisited !!

I made a thread a few years ago that is stuck in the archives, so I have to create a new thread to hold my new information.

I learned recently that Sulfates in shampoos, the main ingredient next to water, (either Sodium Laurel Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate) are actually bad for the hair and might be hazardous to health. The proven damage is that it causes dry hair and and itchy scalp, especially if left on the head too long. The possible problems to health are debatable, and not proven enough to cause any alarm. However, there are those that take those possibilities to heart and have forsaken SLS completely. It can even cause hair loss, btw.

What I found most amusing from my research is that even most anti-frizz shampoos have either one or sometimes BOTH sulfates as their main ingredients!

What does SLS do? It's a cleansing agent that foams well and is really cheap. in higher concentrations, SLS is used worldwide as a skin irritant. (??)

There are more and more shampoos coming out on the market that are free of SLS, and use other ingredients to cleanse...but do not foam as well. I think I have seen enough to decide on making the switch.

Rather than posting quotes or links, just Google it. Most of what you'll find, even on Snopes, is that the health risks are not really proven...but the dryness and frizziness is for sure.

"Shampoo is betta. I go on first and CLEAN the hair."

"Conditioner is betta! I leave the hair silky AND smooth."

"Oh really, fool?!"

"Really!"

When I take my annual bath before Christmas, I'll tell you my results.
