Sunglass Man To boldly go where Illumina has never gone before- Virginia!

Yes, that's right. I've dragged my liberal, Women's Studies-degree-holding, theater attending, New York Times reading, Seven Jeans wearing, Riedel stemware owning, Jameson drinking, coffee guzzling hide out of the New York Metro area. Talk about culture shock. Remember that scene in My Cousin Vinny when Vinny and Lisa get down to Alabama and just stand there in their leather jackets and dark sunglasses and are basically talking loud and fast about Chinese food and sticking out like sore thumbs? Yeah. That's how I feel right now. Now, I'm the biggest social chameleon of them all, make no mistake of that. I could fit in anywhere- given ample time to prepare. But this trip caught me off guard, and now I'm sitting around feeling like the most conspicuous person on the planet. I'm only sorry I didn't bring my "This is what a feminist looks like" shirt down with me :p

But yeah, it's been an interesting weekend thus far. My dear sister is attending UVA and I came down to see her off. I can't get past this feeling of innate strangeness. The air... it's so clean! The sky- I can see stars! The people- I haven't been shoved at all since I got here. It's like being in a different world. I kind of want to get one of those white pith hats and observe people from the bushes.

"Yes... Day 2 of being in Virginia. People continue to be pleasant to each other. I have been taken into their confidence by pounding back shots at the bar, and yet the continue to only exhibit hospitable behavior." How strange for someone like me. It's beautiful, make no mistake of that, but there's a town called "Lynchburg" 20 minutes away from me. I just can't get past that.

I suppose I don't really have a point to this, but I suppose the mental image of this might give someone a chuckle.

Maybe the natives are just afraid of you .. You know like you used to see in the old movies where some one brought matches or took a polaroid of them and took their soul. If they are nice to you then you will not bring the fearful aura of New York down on them or something like that and you will go on your happy way with out hurting them. ( or I'm just wacked in the head )

I'm conjuring a great image in my head but, even for the purpose of researching your chameleon act, it's probably ill advised.

hehe, best part is when total strangers greet you like a long lost friend, while not as common as the all-around general friendliness of the region, I've had it happen to me before.

Though I've heard certain mountain communities are a little more guarded.

I'm so okay with that feeling- I hear it happens in Ireland all the time. I feel like I'd be okay with it there, but here, I don't know. I feel like some sort of impostor when that happens to me here, though, for some reason. Or maybe I'm just not used to it.

Banjos aren't quite as common as you might think, even in the south.
