I was wondering if you run into any problems buying a new car in a different state. I live in NJ, but I'm thinking of buying a new car in MA.

I was thinking that registering the car may be a problem as well.

TIA

You going to go inspect it before signing papers? I wouldn't be comfortable buying such a big-ticket item without looking it over first. You should be able to call your local Dept of Motor Vehicles and they'll tell you what you need to do to get it registered once you bring it home. I don't think you'll have to pay tax on it in MA but you will when you bring it to NJ.

The paper trail for registering will not be that big of a deal.

In my experience with these transactions are the taxes. Who do you pay? Which state law requires what? Which state is more rule abiding? Which state has the higher bracket?

What makes you think I wouldn't? I'm vacationing in MA next week, and I totaled my car Friday night. I just figured I'll have a lot of free time in MA next week, is all.

Wow, that was a quick buy

Just be sure to get a full history on the dealership, and everything should be all right.

Here in NY, you'd need to bring a copy of the sales receipt, showing how much you paid and what sales tax, if any. Then fill out some forms and pay whatever fees/taxes they deem necessary and you'd be set.

Dunno how you'd get it home- temp registration in MA?

I'd assume they could register in for NJ in the state of MA, but I'm not sure (hence one of the reasons for this thread )

Klorox, you better call the DMV in your home state (NJ) AND MA and find out just what they can/will do and how much paperwork and time it will take, before you buy anything. That's my advice!

You can probably have the dealer issue you a temporary tag for the state you purchased the car in and if they have a reciprocoal registration agreement with your home state the dealer can actually take care of all the paperwork for you. Check with the dealer and the DMV's in both states.
