Tommy Emmanuel does the blues!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ahGOzE0l9U

And another music lesson. This time it's how to play Classical Gas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgR3DMWLzsA

The guy is a legend.

Where did the doubters go?

Did anyone notice in "guitar boogie" he's playing the bassline and the chord parts at the same time?

He does have some skills, some of the finger style work reminds a little of Michael Hedges- the man I'd personally rate as the best acoustic guitar player to this day

Tommy goes Irish
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ddS8JodqCA

I can't believe you're trying to downplay or underrate Tommy.
You're just looking silly bro.

Anyways, Michael Hedges has passed on.
I'm talking about guitarist alive today.

I tell you, I'm sitting here watching "Tall Fiddler" with another musician, and we're both in awe. He even plays through the piece again even faster the second time. The guys a freak.

I personally love his slower material. The album "Only" is a regular at my house. He's not just skilled, he has soul and heart, and sings through his guitar.

Yeah, I'm familiar with this. I've watched it.
It's nothing near what Tommy does. It's pretty tame to be honest.

But Hedges was a composer who played guitar. As such his compositions were his emphasis. He wouldn't have cared what you thought of his playing, but what you thought of the piece.

Tommy's love is playing itself. Playing and entertaining. That affects his approach to his instrument.

This is a better Hedges piece - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTC7kPZZmuM - but it's still nothing like what Tommy does, (I respect Hedges immensely) and we're still comparing someone alive to one who's not. It's not a fair thing to do.

I have a tendency to do that as well, mainly because I jam a lot by myself, so it gets to be a habit. I was demonstrating a song for a couple of would be guitar players once, and had to backtrack the whole thing, because I included the bass line in what I was showing them. That's not for the base beginner, to be sure, and sometimes, it's really hard to accomplish. I can't say the guy doesn't have skills though, as it's pretty self evident. I watched several videos while link chasing, and I may go back to them later to try and see how much of that style I can incorporate into my own playing. I don't want to copy him, but there are some nice "right hand" techniques that I could use, since a lot of my music is finger picked.
Note: the emphasis on right hand above is because I know there may be some lefties in the crowd...
