The Lawrence (Mass.) Eagle-Tribune reported in August that the local superintendent of schools, Wilfredo T. Laboy, had recently failed (for the third time) the basic English proficiency test required of all teachers in the state. (English is Laboy's second language.) The state education commissioner said that Laboy was doing "an excellent job" but that he was still going to have to pass the test (a test which Laboy called "stupid"). [Boston Globe-AP, 8-4-03]

Another Moderator may or may not edit your title, as it was rather harsh...as it is first misunderstood until your post is read all the way through...but I agree with what you are saying. How would this guy whose second language is English, become a leader over those teachers that teach English? It made no sense to me. This guy was whining that he should not be held liable and all that, but I believe he should...ESPECIALLY because he suspended other English teachers for failing the same test! I find that most amusing that he was cut by the same sword he was playing with.

I wonder if he does social promotion for students who flunk tests because they are "stupid tests". If you don't know it, you can't teach it! They guy should be suspended until he passes it.

Question Mark

Although I have nothing against educators--I, myself, have been a teacher--it was widely known at the campus where I attended university that education majors chose education because it was an easy degree to obtain.

I actually don't think the title is too harsh. It speeks the truth when many of the kids graduating in '03 couldn't pass the exit exams. And the reason is they aren't being taught the basic material. Most of the graduation class can tell me who Captain Planet is but I'll bet most of them can't ballance theitr check books.

Fair enough.

By the way, I had to go into your post to add a "close font" command back to my quote, because you deleted it when you posted, and left my font color open. You also quoted without having the "close quote" tag.

If he failed the test for the 3rd time he should just pack up an go serve hamburgers. This subject is the most important of all, and the kids deserve better.

question. Is this guy still on full pay? and if so why?

I have the answer for your question...it is called UNIONS. Specificly the NEA (National Educators Association) amongst others have long since given up standing for quality education/educators. They have basicly hamstrung any attempts at weeding out bad teachers and have ensured that good teachers cannot excell...its a long standing pet peeve of mine (being a parent of school age kids) I advocate private schools, school vouchers and home schooling over most of the nations public schools. (this is speaking only about US schools, teachers and unions)

I agree with most of this, but strongly disagree on school vouchers. If you want to send your kid to private school feel free to but do not expect me to help pay for it
