Argentinia just voted to scrap the Amnesty laws that allowed the country's former dicatators immunity from prosecution for any acts that they committed during the military regime.
Is this a good thing? The principle that no-one should be above the law and that all criminals should be brought to justice is a good moral standard to uphold. But what if the risk of upholding such principles risks plunging the country into civil war? What if other Dictatorships look at the removal of immunity as a warning to them that they should never exchange power for immunity from prosecution? Would Charles Taylor have stepped down as President of Liberia if he has seen this item in the news (resulting in many more deaths)? What do you think? |
