This is an e-mail I got from my Dad, I believe His estimate of the distance to be about half of the actual distance, having grown up hunting and camping on Eglin reservation, my parents house is about 25-30 miles from where I suspect the test range to be. The news had said that Eglin officals expected residents around the western part of Eglin to be able to hear the blast. My parents home is north of the eastern half of Eglin. I bet there's not a pine cone still on any of the trees for miles

We did indeed hear the test of the "Big Mother". There had been a warning in the local paper this morning that local residents could expect to hear a rather large explosion sometime today. This is often done to keep folks from flooding the base switchboards. We did not know any details of its nature until Fox News, and others, started their coverage about mid morning. The blast occurred shortly after noon, local time, and seemed to come from the area of what used to be Range 70. We did not see the blast or smoke from it as our location is surrounded by rather dense forest, but it did rattle the windows and was quite loud. I estimate our distance from the detonation to be approximately 12-15 miles. The news folks reported that it was indeed a "Big Mother"

The largest conventional weapon ever made.

Anyone know what the difference is between conventional and WOMD. I think I saw on the news that this bomb emits a gas that then catches fire. Sounds fairly nasty to me. Also who decides if a weapon is nasty enough tobe a WOMD?

WoMD = chemical, biological, and nuclear.

Quite a few weapons in the world today are capable of producing "mass destruction", but not in the sense of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons.

The Mother Of All Bombs is about 10 times bigger than the Daisy Cutter and is guided like a JDAM. Daisy Cutters just fell to the ground in the general area in which they were dropped, but MOAB can guide itself directly to a specific target.

This very public test was a very public message to Saddam. The US made sure Al-Jazeera got a copy of the test.

We're in Lakeland FL, (Too far to hear it) , BUT--- When I lived in Louisville, Kentucky back in 89 and beyond, sometimes, if the air was blowing right, you could hear the tanks at Fort Knox test firing, and doing drills. Sounded like distant booms or thunder

Now when the Space Shuttle comes in to land in the Cape in FL, You can REALLY hear the sonic boom as it comes in!!! I mean, it scared the crap out of me the first time we hear it--sounded like someone crashed into our house lol! VERY loud!!

I remember the first year I moved to Florida, and one night, there was a shuttle going up at night, and I walked to the sliding glass door to see if I could see it (It was a clear night) and WOW! It lit up the sky like the sun almost It was so cool.

Yeah, I live about 25 miles from Ft.Hood (The biggest infranty base in America I think? Not sure.). You hear drills going on all the time. It does sound exacly like thunder from this distants. Well, the sound usally last a bit longer than thunder. They seem to be speicialy busy as of late, no suprise I guess. Also I am starting too see alot more planes and helicopters flying over and flying pretty low as well.
