Shock is the only way to severly cripple their efforts, if not eradicate them. I am open to suggestions though .....
I stole this from the "Aopologies" thread (I hope you don't mind Night Stalker) because I thought I was leading another thread off topic.

My question, as stated in the thread title, is a good question. And I'm looking for ideas.

I believe Saddam is a problem and it needs to be addressed. But I think the bigger issue is the weapons he is accused of possessing. A war will not necessarily remove these "weapons" if they can not be found. So how do we disarm Iraq?

I continue to believe that the UN should take Iraq away from Saddam, forcibly, and do a total search and destroy mission of these weapons. If Saddam is guilty of crimes against humanity he should be tried in a World Court.

I know this is highly unlikely and probably purely unfeasable. But I did not say that the suggestions in this thread have to be easy or even possible.

Just looking for ideas.

Mark

You disarm Iraq by invading and turning the place inside out. There's simply no other way. You could ask them to get rid of them, but i think you too know the answer they'll give.

The only way out of this dilemma is bloodshed on a massive scale, the removal of one or more of the playing power-parties in this game of standoff and staredown. The are two polarized, entranched sides that shall refuse to budge from their established positions on the matter. There's no turning back now. What a mess...

This is the action France and Russia have taken the lead in blocking.

France is now circulating a petition through the SC hoping to triple the number of inspectors, despite Hans Blix saying more inspectors are unneeded. They are requesting more time for inspectors, despite Hans Blix saying that, with substanitive Iraqi cooperation, this could have been a very quick process. In fact, Hans Blix told the UN SC, the disarmament varification process could have been completed in 1991. Since France isn't listening to what the UN inspectors are saying, why do they want more there?

Mark, you believe Saddam should be removed "forcibly"?

Everything I've seen you post until now has said the opposite. Are you talking about some non-violent form of force? Some kind of military action where people aren't hurt?

I have no problem with Saddam being removed, I just don't want innocent civilians to be killed. I would like to see the World come together and lay down the law and try Saddam like Milosevic. I guess the feeling is that only war can do this.

And if we tried Saddom like Milsevic, just how would we go about getting him to court? Send him a court order? Ask him nicely? Send in the British SAS and kidnap him? No! We'd go after him militarily, just like we did Milosevic. The Kosovo Action was ultimately what brought him down, not sanctions! He was preceived as weak in his country our allies and us bombed the crap out of him. Otherwise he'd still be there, killing other ethnics in his own country.

Don't get me wrong, but short of going to war, I don't see any other way to get rid of Saddom and dis-arm Iraq. Sanctions haven't worked for 12 years. what makes everyone else think they will work now. Hell, look how long Castro has been able to hang on in Cuba! Now we wait on him to die of old age!

This thread is purely about ideas and speculation as I wrote:

My thoughts are what I'd like to happen, not what is necessarily feasable. I guess this is not such a good topic of discussion, since reality is too big a factor in the issue.
