For ideological reasons. There are some ways of life that are good, and some that are evil. The good must eventually come into conflict with the evil at some point, and thus war ensues. |

Economic reasons. Wealth and power. Wars simply redistribute resources and reconfigure the mechanisms of authority to own and control them. |

It is merely human nature to want to fight one's neighbours. Violent disagreements are inevitable. We are an abnormally aggressive species, and must fight on a regular basis to sate our violent tendencies. |

People simply must defend themselves when they feel threatened. This ties into numbers 1 and 3, but differs in that it involves the belief that one may stay in ones own boundaries permanently, only fighting when attacked or provoked and not making any effort whateoever to *start* a conflict. |

Conflict and violence are simply universal, natural phenomena. All things within the physical world (not just the human species) exhibit some forms of violent characteristics. Human warfare is merely an expression of this universal, chaotic force in the human realm of things. If other species could organize and wage war as humans do, they would. |

I think this is an important question to be asking ourselves, especially within the current heated international climate. Just why are we, as humans, continually finding ourselves in situations where killing our own species is deemed necessary, desirable and beneficial? I'm interested to know just how varied the opinions on this subject are amongst the Ironworkers.
Bear in mind the options listed herein are merely a few ideas as to what I think warfare may be all about, and there can be no right or wrong answers. I'm merely interested as to what your proferred choices are within the list I have provided. [ 09-15-2002, 02:20 AM: Message edited by: The Hierophant ]

gee tough question. I said Economic reasons i.e. wealth and power, because all the major wars in history were based on this. WW2 Germany invaded because Hitler wanted power of Europe (there are other reasons, I know). Iraq invaded Iran because they wanted ultimate power of that region.
England conquered a lot of the world and set up colonies all over the place because they found gold and other riches in other parts of the world. Even back to the Dark Ages, England invaded France, Scotland Ireland because they wanted domination. Rome had power over most of Europe in the Roman Empire - all for Rome. The list goes on. Like I said, it is a hard question and I believe it is a mixture between quite a few there, but mostly wealth and power. |

Guess I disagree with the majority... I think it's just human nature...

I voted for:
Conflict and violence are simply universal, natural phenomena. All things within the physical world (not just the human species) exhibit some forms of violent characteristics. Human warfare is merely an expression of this universal, chaotic force in the human realm of things. If other species could organize and wage war as humans do, they would. That is quite true. Even in animal kingdom, same species or sub species have the tendencies to kill each other, just like lions always tries to kill cheetahs on sight. Call it survival of the fittest, if you may. I chose option three, it's only human nature to go to war every now and then. We've had big wars in every century so far, and we'll have one or two in this one as well, it's only a matter of time.
