You've just arrived in a foreign nation, a landless person of no reputation; and it's just your luck that the absolute ruler (a monarch, theocrat, whatever) is passing by at the same time. They stop. You are commanded to bow before your liege.

You do.

Don't worry. If you didn't, it would just be considered a faux pas. Nothing bad would happen to you.

But what person would you kneel and bow before? Yes, you can choose your own ruler; you can even make a ruler out of a janitor, if you wish. It's simply a person before whom you are willing to acknowledge yourself as subservient by inate quality. Heh-heh.

Any takers?

Well, either someone who'd kill me if I didn't or just someone who's just and fair.

I think I'd only bow down before (give my respect to) people who did great things, for example someone who risked his/her own life to save someone else, someone who went to great lengths to keep the peace between two countries at war, or someone who achieved a lot in a particular field of science, improving the quality of human life.

Yea, and people who force me to bow with a gun or so, but that's only the act of bowing down without the implication of giving your respect, so that doesn't count, IMO.

I would only bow down to a truly good and noble person, worthy of my loyalty. Characters like King Arthur from the legends.

I would only bow down to people in Japan, as I believe that is a sign of respect in that particular country

I would go down on one knee to propose to my future wife, whoever she may be, but I don't suppose you can call that 'bowing down'
