Here's a little tidbit of knowledge you may or may not know. I know we're
all a bit scared because of the bio-terror happening. Even though your
chances of getting an infected letter are probably the same as getting
struck by lightning, you still feel apprehension at going to get the mail.
So here's a little empowering tip. Hot steam WILL kill Anthrax spores.
Simply iron a suspicious letter on high setting with a damp cloth. This will
effectively sterilize it. Don't use a microwave or dry heat as these methods
are less effective. The only other effective non-chemical method I know of
is Gamma irradiating, and not many of us have this kind of equipment at
home. As far as sterilizing chemicals go, chlorine bleach compounds seems
to be the best. This should help put your mind at ease. Suspicious letters
include, those without a return address, those with misspelled names and
clumsy handwriting, mailing labels attached crookedly with no return
address, return address is someone you don't recognize, letter is taped
completely shut, etc.

BTW: The government is contemplating setting up units to mass irradiate incoming mail at major postal centers. This will make it exceedingly difficult to use the mail as a delivery system.

And a major one: foreign mail that you are NOT expecting (or any other mail that you are not expecting or for which you cannot account)

Personally, as an effort to protect myself, I've decided not to open any mail that may be disguised as a "bill"

"The Martyr" (excerpt)

There is sobbing of the strong,
And a pall upon the land;
But the People in their weeping
Bare the iron hand:
Beware the People weeping
When they bare the iron hand.

--Herman Melville (written after the assasination of President Abraham Lincoln)
