Syrian troops 'will quit Lebanon'
Syria says it will co-operate with the UN over implementing a resolution calling for Syrian troops to leave Lebanon, a senior minister has said.

Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed al-Mualem said future withdrawals would be carried out in line with the deal which ended the Lebanese civil war.

Pressure has grown on Syria to pull out of Lebanon since the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

In 1994, a UN resolution demanded Syria withdraw its remaining 15,000 troops.

I Love this from the Syrians He (Mr Mualem) said Syria was worried that a rapid withdrawal would lead to a security vacuum in Lebanon.

"Syria believes that before accelerating the rhythm of its withdrawals, it will be necessary for the Lebanese army and security forces to be in a position to fill the vacuum without damaging the security of Lebanon or Syria."

They have been there since 1989-1990 and they are just now talking about getting up and running a Lebanese army and security forces to be in a position to fill the vacuum. Well spank my rear end and paint it purple, I now see the problem with the USA in Iraq. We have to control the country for years, sign some piece of paper saying we'll withdraw, not follow the agreement and delay any action for 10 or more years. Then come out and say we'll withdraw when warn "the Iraqi security forces and army might not be in a position to fill the vacuum". Instead of activly working to get the Iraqi army and security forces up and running so there will not be a vacuum.

Question Mark

This is merely one extended example of how the Middle East keeps itself limited on the world stage--Middle Eastern countries don't work together; rather, they fall back on ancient tribal in-fighting, thus mutually insuring that no one gets too far ahead. In some sense, you almost want to feel sorry for them....almost, but not quite.

Were they all to open up and democratize, then the Middle East could be a wonderful place...and they wouldn't even have to abandon Islam.

What these news will break, pray? The sence of common logic maybe? Pfeh. Asad is all talk, no action, besides he is a terrorist. One can only believe his threats about killing infidels, and even that with some degree of mistrust.

Now daddies little Bashar says that they'll withdraw to eastern Lebanon. He's just another dictator, so the only thing he understands is force, or the threat of it's use.

The latest I saw was that there are some major powers in Syria that are pressuring Asad to keep Syrian power in Lebanon.
