We got phone via the cable last week and since then our maximum donwload speed dropped to 50kb/s where it was over 400kb/s before. I called tech support and and they said that they could ping to me with the right times and at times I have under 10 ms ping time to the ISP's site. But ping times say nothing about speed right? Just that there is some connection. Is there anything else that could be the problem or do I have to hope I don't have some stupid on the phone next time. They also said they checked the modem settings with account settings but I doubt that really.

Ping time just tells you the round trip time, and nothing about the link capacity, as you said.

There are many many things that could be the problem, we have no way of knowing what the cause is without more info.

Hell yeah, the great problem of someone at the helpdesk who doesn't know shit, not about how to check if I have the right settings nor about internet in general. Just called again and the guy found I was right in a few seconds So he's fixing it now.
