Hi all!
I'm new here but I've been lurking for a few months and have learned a great deal from all the smart people here! This is my fourth time ascending, so I was surprised to discover a little problem I'd never encountered before. I've been having loads of fun with my new party of four (felpurr samurai with muramasa, fairy bishop, human gadgeteer, and mook bard). I have them just roaming up on AP, gaining tons of xp (they're all at least level 30 now) and hoping to find one of those level 50 armegazers... lol! Anyway, as you can imagine, I'm always needing tons of ammunition for my gadgie, and I'm spoiled rotten and only want to use lightening bolts! So once in a while I'm having to portal back and forth like crazy between Ferro and Arnika! Well, maybe I portaled one too many times because I've actually been crushed on occasion by the return portal to Arnika! The last thing I see upon return just before I get the "You've been crushed" message, the screen is fading to white but it actually looks like I've been portaled into the floor of the Arnika temple (I can make out what looks like either Braffit or one of the lay brothers, but I'm looking up at them as if i were somehow below the floor). I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else here... Not sure if this is a glitch or if it may have something to do with the fact that my samurai casts the return portal to Arnika, and his air points are of course much lower than my bishop. Thank you all for making this the best forum I've ever seen on the net!

This is a known bug. It's rare, however - i think i encounter it about once every two or three games. (For this reson, i make a copy of the save file for my ironman parties - if the crash hapenes, only one playing session is lost).

Don't know what causes it - the odds are probably higher if you cast return often in a single session.

For me, it's usually at the T'Rang teleporter, or in trynton, since these are the places i portal to most often.

It once happened to me at He'Li - cast return to portal, see her for a moment, fell through the floor - and landed savely below the temple (where you land with the rapax queens teleporter). And it once happened at ascension peak - had a portal at the top, recalled, fell through the floor, and landed at the entrance from mountain wildernesse.

Yeah, I've had that happen a few times, too. It seemed to happen when two conditions were met: (a) I'd been playing for a long time (several hours) and (b) had made a lot of boundary crossings with portals. I suspect it's a memory problem, because on restoring and using a portal, everything was fine.

After I made it a habit to quit the game briefly during long sessions, the party didn't get crushed by teleporting.

I had a lot of crashes with the portal spell on my older computer ( 256MB RAM, Win98 ). After I bought my new one (with 1024 MB RAM, Win XP) I only had one some months ago at the Umpani Base Camp. So maybe Nightowl2 is right.

But I sometimes think, that crash can happen too,if a monster or a NPC is on the same place by random.

Greetings and Merry Christmas

Thanks everyone for your responses! Nightowl2, you seem to be right about the issue of long sessions, because I'd been playing one of my all day marathons, and since I've followed your advice, it hasn't happened again. Loudhy, my computer has 512 MB RAM, so I don't know if that's a contributing factor here. But you bring up an interesting point about NPC's being in the same place by random! I once rather stupidly portaled back to He'Li's after dismissing Vi and had her crash right on top of me, and I can tell you I never really wanted to get so up close and personal with a one-eyed Wagner opera reject, let alone be crushed as a result! Anyway, thank you all for making me feel welcome here!

Glad that cleared up your problem, Sin. No matter how much RAM or disk space you have, it's never enough
