I have a serious problem. When I first got my hard drive (80GB) I split it into a few partitions, and set aside 2GB for WinXP, me being assured it'd be enough. A few weeks afterwards I get a message saying my hard drive space is reaching critical level and I need to remove some stuff. I do, and it frees virtually none. To solve the problem I had to assign an extra 1GB to satisfy its complaints. That worked up till now, which is like 3 - 4 months maybe. Now, it reached critical level again. I managed to free up enough to keep it happy, but sucked away a whole gig in like 3 months! And no, I did not install anything new on the drive, it just disappeared. I have WinXP Pro. if that has any relevance. Please, anyone know whats happening?

I had a problem that was not unlike this one, but a bit different I believe. My Windows 98 SE started leeching memory from drive C every time I turned on the computer. After I realised that it took 249 MB every time, it didn't take long to counter it. My Windows swap settings were set to 249 MB, and some glitch in the system, won't go into details right now, caused the swap space to be stored. Do this: Set swap file to minimum, delete all temporary files, defragment and reinstall windows. A simple reinstall didn't work for me, so I sudgest you follow these steps. After that, resize swap file settings to whatever you want and the problem should be solved.

You really should designate at least 10 gigs for XP. System restore eats up lots of disk space, you have temporary internet files taking up space, you have virtual memory trying to get space... With 80 gigs you should have enough space to allow XP some room to breathe.

Slicer remember it's windows you're talking about. Sucking up space is it's specialty.

could it be that a few of you had gotten a virus infection... there is viruses out there which copies files to almost unlimited amounts, and therefore leeches quit great amounts of hd...
I had been a problem to me a few times... Today my c drive is 5 gb, and that is more than enough. My comp is running win xp also...

If you don't want to set the size that large then disable the restore function. You won't have the feature, but restore consumes a huge amount of space.

A few suggestions:
Have the windows swap file on its own seperate partition - this speeds things up and frees up 512MB or whatever you use, on your windows partition. Turn off the hibernation feature which dumps the entire memory contents to the HD when in use so that's however much memory you have MB lost. Clean your internet cache - I did this the other day and regained a few hundred MB. Empty recycle bin? You can get some programs that can delete duplicate DLLs etc. - these free up some space too. Other than that I'd go into administrative tools -> services and turn off any services you don't need that might use HD space. Try removing some windows components that you don't use. Delete all windows temp files. [ 11-20-2003, 07:20 PM: Message edited by: Vaskez ]
