Hey I'm new here...well kinda...I've been lurking around these boards for a while. Anyway, I reinstalled BGII the other day, to take a break from Icewind Dale, and I wanted to make a party modelled after the characters of a story I'm workin on, so here's my party:
Human Avenger (PC)-staff, spears, clubs, sling, 2 handed weapon style Elven Stalker- scimitars, flails, long bow, two weapon style Dwarven Berzerker- spears, halberds, two handed weapon style Half-elven Sorceror- staff, sling Half-elven Sorceress- staff, sling The two mage have mostly the same 1st level spells, magic missile mostly, and then from there, the sorceror has a lot of area of effect and high damage spells like fireball, cloudkill, lightning, ice storm, etc while the sorceress uses more conjuring and illusion spells like invisibility 10' radius, monster summoning, things like that. Basically the sorceror uses more spells that deal direct damage whereas the sorceress uses everything else. I've passed the part where Imoen is taken out of the party, so I have an empty spot...Right now I have Cernd, but I'm gonna dump him soon because he's pretty worthless to my party. I don't really need a thief, since I have the Find traps and knock spells between the mages and the druid, and I can use my Ranger to scout since he has a good stealth ability, even though he can't backstab or pickpocket. I was thinking about maybe creating a bard. I've never really played with one before in any of the BG games. What would you reccommend as far as proficiencies and such? In a Role playing/story setting I'd have him use maybe throwing knives, daggers, and a bow...but is that a good idea for the in-game character? |

Welcome to Ironworks!
Your party needs some kind of healer, either a cleric or a druid. But really it depends on what you like using.

And yes you CAN Backstab, you have a Stalker.
I'd say you're fine, Tank-wise, between your Berserker and your Stalker. But you'll need to find TWO really good sets of Leather Armor, which might be a problem. Two Sorcerers might be overkill. Mega casting power, sure, but if you overlook ONE spell that might turn out to be critical later in the game.....ouch. I'd have had one Sorcerer, one Mage. Don't overlook Cleric spells. A Druid is a perfectly good Healer, but with the powerful combat spells in BG2, coupled with the stronger Healing Potions, healing spells have become less important--and Clerics can cast many more spells, and much better spells, than Druids can. (In general, of course.) I would never make a party without a Thief. I know there are ways around the skills--the Priest spell Find Traps, and Monks can Detect Traps and Stealth, Rangers can Stealth as well, and Bards can Pick Pockets. You know what? I don't care. Nothing compares to having a dedicated Thief. So, if you take my advice, you'll have....ahh....eight party members. [ 07-23-2002, 07:26 PM: Message edited by: SixOfSpades ]

hmmm...I was thinking about that...but I don't really think it's necessary...the Ranger and the Druid are both pretty good tanks. the ranger does a good amount of damage fairly quickly because he dual wields a scimitar and a flail. The druid doesn't have the greatest AC...but Avengers can shapeshift into the three regular druid forms (wolf and bear forms) as well as baby wyvren, flame salamander (which gives you access to three castings of fireball breath, useful for killing trolls), and sword spider. I also have some weapons that are very useful for a druid since completing the druid grove quest. So between the dwarf berzerker, the Elven stalker, and the human avenger I have three tanks...plus the Stalker is very good with a bow and the druid has proficiency points in slings. And besides that, I have two sorcerors, so I don't need as many pure fighters as would with a straight mage or just one sorceror. That's why I was thinking a bard...they're versatile, and I don't have any characters that can backstab or pick pockets, and I don't want a thief...

ok...i was typing my reply while sixofspades made his, lol. Well...the two sorcerors may be overkill...but I played the game partway through that way once before and they wreaked havoc on everyone. It got to the point where I had a fighter and a ranger doing cleanup work after the two sorcerors, a cleric, and a thief decimated everyone with spells and ranged weapons. Plus I like the idea of having them "specialize" in certain kinds of spells...one will be throwing off fireballs, lightning, ice storms, etc while the other is summoning monsters and casting spells like silence and greater malison to weaken the opposotion. But I'm still pretty early in the game...maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to drop one of the sorcerors and replace her with a conjurer or something? Maybe I'll do that.
I still have that 6th spot to fill up. I dunno, thieves are really useful, I like playing em. As a matter of fact, most of my parties have had two of them; one for backstab/pick pockets and one for trapping and opening locks. But i'm getting kind of bored with them...and it seems a bard would be more versatile, being that I don't really need a thief with my current set up anyway. Detecting traps is lovely, but sometimes you'll actually want to, I don't know... DISARM some? You can walk around most, but what are you going to do when they put a Power Word:Kill trap on a door or chest?

Perhaps a Cleric/Ranger? Another tank that can heal and cast offensive spells as well. |
