Gather round Ironworkers... let me tell a tale of woe, familiar no doubt to some, but if you’re sitting comfortably I will begin

Now this dear friends is not the usual tale of banging your head at the refusal of drivers to work ECT, Tho’ there is plenty of that. No siree! This is a much more sinister tale

My computer being 18 months old and running perfectly as a windows ME machine suddenly got molested one fine day by its owner, whom for some unknown reason decided to upgrade to XP *come to the dark side Luke*

First the keyboard. Both CTRL keys died at the same time! All other keys fine. Strange but at $15 not to bad.

Second the mouse. Walks past the mouse a few days later and smells electrical smoke! Yep the mouse had died. MMMMMM strange, no one I know has ever had a ps2 type mouse self ignite before

Third the Chipset fan seized. Having a driver problem with the soundcard required me to take the case off. This fan was working about 2 months ago when I did a spring clean "blow the dust away" operation. Maybe not connected but I am cynical

Fourth. My computer desk chair broke... nothing to do with weight or stress fractures due to overuse nope no way, had to be connected to XP

Fifth. My cdrom reader/burner is playing up. Some days it works some days it don't. But only since I loaded XP

Sixth. And this is by far the most serious. My BG2 cd is scratched and the cd player *when working* can only load about 25% before "catastrophic failure"

Does any one have a shotgun I can borrow? I need to shoot something. But do I shoot myself, the computer or a Mr Bill Gates?

I hate to say this, but most of the failures you describe are hard to attribute to XP. The mouse self igniting might indicate some weirdness in the PSU, but XP shouldnt cause that.

Go shoot at Bill anyway though.

Well... seems like Windows XP Woodoo edition finally came out...

If I were you... I wouldn't shoot anybody, just take a deep breath and accept your fate as a Microsoft user...

This isnt exactly encouraging when im just about to install XP... Do those sorts of problems only happen when you upgrade from ME? (please say yes)

To me it sounds like those failures are due to unstable power source, at times too low, at times too high... you can fry hardware that way. Maybe XP requires your cpu to work more and this has triggered the problem. I'd check that.
But I'd also shoot Mr. Gates, just to be sure...

Take the shot at Billy, just don't use a shotgun - I recommend the Barret .50.

Well Dagorion what I am really regretting is the change. everything was working fine so why did I bother

Most problems may be to do with power fluctuations, at a guess. May be because it is running hot 45 deg (still wating to get a replacement chipset fan).

But before you do change makesure you have all the drivers. Try the drivers out on a friends computer first. It may help with trouble shooting later on

As for me, I up grades a Dell to XP with no problems. Oh I had the driver problems and I heven had to pay, gasp! yes pay for up grade to the cd driver. But all went clean. Works fine. Though I did only upgrade to the home edition.

I like XP and haven't found a machine that can't run it, but if you're using a real old timer then It's better to revert to 2000 or at least partition a 2000 drive. ME - bleh

Pick up two friends and go to the next bar and order three beers.

After ordering 14 times more, you will recognize that "xp" has been
removed completely from your brain.
