The horror! Say it ain't so!

Seriously though, questions related to levelling up is written in the manual, and there is also an in-game tutorial for those who want to know how to play the game.
True enough but some people dont read manuals. I dont. Well, I do the background sections but forget the mechanics. In any case weapon proficiencies per level are NOT covered in the manual, neither are tables for THACO.

for proficincies - and feel free to correct me :

warriors - one every three levels
clerics - one every four levels
theives - one every six levels
mages - one every nine levels

kits get profs based on their parent class. multi classes get the best of their classes.

various classes get special abilites at certain level - monks get quivering palm at level 15, paladins get various innate cleric spells, and so on. magic-users get spells based on the table at the back.

You dont really need to know this stuff though, the game handles all the numbers and *supposedly* never makes a mistake.

I double-checked the SoA manual and was horrified to find out that true enough, it did not cover the issue of weapon proficiency distribution among the different classes.

Fighter/Paladin/Ranger/Barbarian: 1 proficiency per 3 levels.
Thief/Cleric/Monk/Bard: ~~ per 4 levels.
Mage/Sorcerer: ~~ per 6 levels.

I now eat my words, all three posts of them and say sorry to FelixJaeger.

It's generally accepted that answering questions accurately and politely is the best alternative, regardless of how "inane" you may think them to be.

Personally, I found the manual to be unweildy and rather disorganized, far more oriented towards "entertaining" rather than "instructing."
