This morning, a student of mine who is a "directed study" student (meaning that they signed her up to do a class on her own, under my direction) interrupted another lecture (not even her own hour in which I have her) to ask a question about a lesson. Normally, I don't tolerate interruptions, but I calmly told her to wait until the break (15 minutes away) and that I would help her then. At the break, I went to find her, but I couldn't.
Come to find out, she went and complained about me to the director, telling her that I told her that I had 20 other students and was "too busy to be bothered to help her." That is a bald-faced LIE. I NEVER at any one time have ever told any student that I couldn't help them because I had others to attend to. I happened to be in the middle of a lecture, of which we only have 2 days in that class before finals and this information was VITAL...but that's beside the point; it wasn't even her class!! I spoke to Ms. Franklin, our director, and told her what had transpired, and she is going to reprimand the student for lying. But I am so infuriated right now I am shaking all over and can hardly type. I swear, if I see her again today, I'm going to smoke her. She'd better start running because I will land on her so hard she's gonna tell her GRANDKIDS about it if she survives long enough to have grandkids. I don't need this crap. They don't PAY me enough to put up with this B.S. Later, Sazerac

Be cool Saz. You gave her a reality check that the world doesn't revolve around her. For some that can be bitter medicine. Don't let her crap get to you.
Also. Keep in mind the "chinese whispers" aspect. You heard second hand what she said. There may be a deviation in what she said and what you were told. "He was too busy to help" can become "He was too busy to be bothered to help" quite easily. Her annoyance at not being helped because of circumstances may have been interpreted as annoyance at you. Mate, I don't know if that's all true, but it's a possibility you should consider. Don't judge her without hearing her side of the story. However she did go and complain so that's not good. ![]() Anyhow don't let this get to you. Franklin was on your side right? She's getting reprimanded. All's well. Such is the life of a teacher. You're a champion and you don't need to be letting this - which you won't even remember in seven years - take too much energy from you. Be safe Hugh |

Well, Sazerac, feel free to lay into her, but just don't go 'over the top'. This may seem stupid, but going 'over the top' may discourage the student from coming to school, or, even worse, to your lessons

I would be more inclined to believe her if I didn't know beyond the shadow of a doubt that she is a habitual liar and has done similar things to other teachers. She is NOT getting by with doing this to me, though. She doesn't know the tail of the dragon she has pulled!
I am calming down now. Apparently she has left the campus for the day, and good riddance to her. I'm still every bit as angry, though, and I'm having to edit myself to keep myself from saying something completely foul right now. -Saz

You have the right to be upset with her Saz! What is a 15 minute wait? And she must understand your priority is the student in that particular class!
But Saz do not do something you might regret in your anger. Smoking her might seem the appropiate thing to do at the moment. Of course you may regret that when you have calmed down. But that student definitely need a good talk to! Just calm down some before you give it to her. Edit: This might not be the correct thread for this but I´m glad to see you back in here Saz. I hope you are feeling much better. *pitiful voice from back pf forum*
Don't do to her what my history teacher did to me, Sazerac.... No, seriously, I am a bit of a...uh...liar..."I was off school the day of the detention Sir" being the most common. If the teacher finds out that's not true and rants at me, I just lock up, gritting my teeth and snarling "Yes sir" or "OKAY." The best way to get through to this kid is to just sit her down and calmly point out she's in the wrong. Then, when she starts sniping, point out *again* what you said in that infuriating calm way my math teacher has....and she can't do a thing. Believe me, that's ANNOYING, more than being ranted and shouted at.

Saz, please feel free to completely ignore my advice. I merely offer it as an alternative not mentioned:
~ Q: Why would you want to smoke her in public? Please, take in the Larger Picture: She's your student, isn't she? You have to GRADE her, don't you...? ~ ~ ~ "Ms Smith, I can see that you are upset, but proper spelling is very important to me. The 65 I gave your paper stands." ~ ~ ~ Trust me, significantly downsizing her GPA is a lesson that she will Never forget. :evil
