It might be a stupid question, but...Can a Wizard use a high wisdom for anything but Lore? Does it have any effect apart from that?

Wisdom really only comes into play for a Wizard when he/she casts the wish spell, it determines the dialogue options and what happens when you ask the Djinni for something or to do something.

Party Mages/Sorcerers generally have no use of WIS. People with ToB and wish to solo the game with a Mage/Sorcerer however, need it.

Minimally, an optimised Mage will have... ...

STR: 12
DEX: 18
CON: 16
INT: 18
WIS: 10
CHA: 08

This gives us a total of 82 stat points.

Why 12 STR? Well... it sucks when your Mage becomes immobile because he/she was not strong enough to carry some Melf's Minute Meteors. The reason for 10 WIS is to prevent a penalty to Lore. Party Sorcerers can go one step further and reduce INT to 10 as well.

Mages don't even need WIS for Lore purposes, either: Your Thief will always have higher Lore, even if he only has 10 INT & WIS. As for the Wish spells, you can always buy Potions of Insight at any Temple (13 Potions in each one, IIRC).

If you are looking for lore, grab a Bard. When you are done remember to throw it in the trash can. Littering is against the Amnish law!

If you do not wish your Mages to help identify stuff, then 8 has to be the barest of the barest minimums. Any lower, and you start to incur penalties to your saving throws versus mental spells.

The reason for a base 18 WIS for solo Mages and Sorcerers, is because you get to boost it twice during the game, getting a total of 20, which is not obtainable with a Potion of Insight, and far superior when it comes to rolling your luck in a Wish spell.
