...formerly of one of my favorite bands, The Clash, has died. No cause of death yet, but it appears to have been a heart attack. He was only 50.

So sad.

At the weekend I read that he had written a song about Nelson Mandela with Bono that will be played at the HIV/Aids concert on Robben Island on Feb 2nd.

BTW Epona - London Calling was The Clash but I can't help noticing a touch of the Sex Pistols in your post!!

Well that was unexpected to say the least, especially since I was listening to some of them on the Sunday... very strange, and very sad.

I hope this has nothing to do with an overdose. Too many drug deaths lately.

Yeah, my sig's been like that for a few days Donut

Bloody hell, I've been miserable about this all day, he was one of my heroes. Truly a sad day.

The Clash: "Stay Free"

We met when we were in school
Never took no shit from no one, we weren't fools
The teacher says we're dumb
We're only having fun
We piss on everyone
In the classroom

When we got thrown out I left without much fuss
An' weekends we'd go dancing
Down Streatham on the bus
You always made me laugh
Got me in bad fights
Play me pool all night
Smokin' menthol

I practised daily in my room
You were down The Crown planning your next move
Go on a nicking spree
Hit the wrong guy
Each of you get three
Years in Brixton
I did my very best to write
How was Butlins?
Were the screws too tight?
When you lot get out
We're gonna hit the town
We'll burn it fuckin' down
To a cinder

Cos years have passed and things have changed
And I move anyway I wanna go
I'll never forget the feeling I got
When I heard that you'd got home
An' I'll never forget the smile on my face
'Cos I knew where you would be
An' if you're in The Crown tonight
Have a drink on me
But go easy...step lightly...stay free

Spanish Bombs

Spanish songs in Andalucia
The shooting sites in the days of '39
Oh please leave the vendanna open
Fredrico Lorca is dead and gone

Bullet holes in the cemetary walls
The black car of the Guardia Civil
Spanish bombs on the Costa Rica
I'm flying in on a DC10 tonight

chorus
Spanish bombs, yot'quierro y finito
yote querda, oh ma corazon
Spanish bombs, yot'quierro y finito
yote querda, oh ma corazon

Spanish weeks in my disco casino
The freedom fighters died up on the hill
They sang the red flag, they wore the black one
But after they died it was mockingbird hill

Back home the buses went up in flashes
The Irish tomb was drenched in blood
Spanish bombs shatter the hotels
My senorita's rose was nipped in the bud

chorus

The hillsides ring with 'Free the people'
Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39
With trenches full of poets, the ragged army
Fixing bayonets to fight the other line

Spanish bombs rock the province
I'm hearing music from another time
Spanish bombs on the Costa Brava
I'm flying in on a DC10 tonight

Spanish songs in Andalucia, Mandolina, oh ma corazon
Spanish songs in Granada.... oh ma corazon
