I have written and phoned mps for various reasons - usually things to do like tax rebates that loophole us out, or social issues such as syringes on the beach. Sometimes action gets taken, sometimes not.

I believe in making an informed choice and affecting change, so I vote every time - It's also compulsory here. (Except for one local council elections when they didn't let the public know and then tried to fine the entire electorate for not voting!! Smell fishy? Boy did that backfire...)

Not all lobbiest are for large companies. I have lobbied against the building of a 6 lane highway down the middle of a small town. The Highway Dept. wanted it and the people in the town didn't. After lobbying in person to State Senator and Representative and the Highway Dept. the highway went around the town. Almost everybody a winner.

I wrote a letter to my MP expressing disgust that :

a) there is a severe lack of postgraduates in my subject area in this country, and :

b) I was unable to get any financial help from the government (a few thousand) to do my PhD in this subject, and

c) the government is begging people to do postgraduate work in my subject, and finally

d) they couldn't throw me a few thou to help me through 3 years of slog, but spent $1 billion on a large party building in London that was used once, then thrown away. No exaggeration.
