You know the word "Ate", right(past thingy of the word "Eat")? My little sister said that her English teacher(my ex-teacher) pronouces "Ate" very wierdly. Instead of 'eit' she pronouces it 'et'(if one child said 'eit', she said the child was incorrect). I told my sister to tell her teacher its 'eit'. Today, she did and the teacher replied "Why do you think that? Your brother(thats me) said that, didnt he?" and started laughing quietly. It seems this teacher remembers me and is asking for a killin ! What do you think?

uss, this is going to be no consolation, but regional differances allow for both pronunciations.

Oh the joys of the English language

Question Mark

Yes, uss, here in the States, it's proper to pronounce it ait (or eit as you know it), but in the South (and perhaps other areas) some DO pronounce it 'et'. Around here, it's considered slang to pronounce it 'et', but it IS allowable. However, 'proper' English in the States, it's only pronounced 'ait'.

Not that this will help you necessarily. Just a bit of extra knowledge - after all, knowledge is power.

Question Mark

Oh...and for the dentist issue:

Here in the States it's either:

Dentists (plural) make (no 's') me nervous.
OR
The dentist (singular) makes (with an 's') me nervous.
