Is it just me or has Hollywood gone completely insane? I fancy myself to be sort of a movie buff, and I think I can safely say that it's rare that a decent movie comes along.
I almost stopped going to movies entirely when I heard that Britney Spears was starring in a new movie (for those of you that have either been living under a rock your entire life or have the IQ of ketchup, Britney Spears is a "singer" who writhes around wearing clothing that can only be seen using a high - powered electron microscope). The lady can't even *sing*, so how could a semi - intelligent Hollywood director be able to think that she could ever *act*?! At this point, I think I should mention that I never actually SAW the Britney Spears movie. I couldn't drag myself to pay 8 bucks to watch a piece of slime like that slither across the screen. There was also the highly - anticipated Star Wars: Episode II. This, I'm sorry to say, was as bad as Episode I. I wasn't really disappointed with the acting job of Hayden Christiansen as Anakin Skywalker; I expected him to do a horrible job, and I got what I expected. He had some of the dumbest lines I've ever heard in a movie. As an example, here's a dialogue excerpt: Anakin: I don't like sand. It's rough and hard. Not like you. You're soft and smooth. Padme: WHAT?! (she shoots him and the audience bursts into applause for the remainder of the film) (OK, maybe that last line was made up, but you get the idea) Hollywood HAS, however, come out with some excellent films recently. Spiderman, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and Big Trouble are a few examples. The last one, Big Trouble, has to have been the funniest movie I've ever seen in my entire life. It's based on a novel by Dave Barry, and stars Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Dennis Farina, Mike McShane, Johnny Knoxville, and many others as a bunch of Miami citizens who are unwittingly drawn into a major crime heist involving a nuclear bomb, 2 Russian arms dealers, one corrupt corporation, and a herd of goats. It's one of the best movies of all time, but it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves. We've also got some new movies coming out very soon, some of which I have my doubts about. Part of me says that Star Trek: Nemesis will be a classic, but another part of me says that judging by the decline in quality of the last few ST movies, this one won't even be worth going to. The new James Bond movie, Die Another Day, should be interesting. Goldeneye was probably the best 007 movie of all time, Tomorrow Never Dies was also a classic, and The World Is Not Enough was pretty damned good. Logically, this movie should be a decent one, but the Bond series is dwindling in popularity. The Matrix: Reloaded is the movie that I have serious doubts about. The Matrix was, don't get me wrong, a damned good movie for the most part! The fight scenes that DIDN'T involve a Colombine - style massacre were well - choreographed and executed, with the techno music in the background adding to the futuristic effect. The only thing I really hated about this movie was how many facial expressions Keanu Reeves made: ZERO. I swear to God that this guy's eyebrows did not budge a micrometer during the course of the entire movie! He also said "Whoa" far too often. Maybe Neo, the character he played, was just a guy who was surprised easily. Or perhaps he was having flashbacks to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. I don't know. What I DO know is that Matrix II will be a bigger, possibly better version of The Matrix. It will undoubtedly have extra violence that will have nothing to do with the plot. It will undoubtedly have a great storyline to compensate for the violence. It will undoubtedly have Keanu Reeves making an ass of himself. It will undoubtedly have Laurence Fishburne as an even - more stoic and serious Morpheus. And, to top it all off, it will undoubtedly have a Rage Against the Machine song somewhere in the film. So that's my forty bucks about movies. My point is this: GO WITH WHAT YOUR INSTINCTS TELL YOU when you're going to see a movie! If you see a movie with Eminem or Britney Spears as the lead character, avoid it at all costs. And if your instincts tell you to go see a movie like THAT, then you should probably check yourself into the insane asylum. "Whoa..." ![]()

In the last 25-30 years or so, movies have become much more of a mass medium, so there's pressure for more mediocre movies to be produced for less profit. As a whole, this means that great movies are a lot smaller percentage of the total movies. Also, people's tastes have shifted from high drama to more down to earth, in a word "crap", movies. I think that it has created some pretty good movies, but it seems that they're in a different vein than previous ones. For example "Monsters Inc" and "Shrek" were excellent movies, but obviously not in the same vein as "Casablanca" and others.
You're right though, Hollywood has become obsessed with profits, not unlike industrialisation in England in the 1700s-1800s (so it's a bad analogy )

Lol! It looks like Hollywood would have learned that not all famous musicians are good actors...for example,,,Mariah Carey in Glitter. A story about herself, and she won the worst acttess award for that...though she never showed up to claim her trophy...
I thik Hollywood either has run out of good ideas, and are having to resort to making stupid sequals (Like Cinderella 2, and all the Cinderella type movies...) or they are paying too much attention to the courts and legal matters of downloadable movie piracy. And why the hell did it take so long for them to finally decide to start making movies based on comic books? The next one to come up is The Incredible Hulk. Man! I was 5 years old when that was on TV. Only now do they want to make a movie of it? maybe I should go into the Hollyood business, and I will pay Ziroc's bills for this website for you guys to tell me what movie to make next. I can't lose that way! I'll be rich! I will have 10 concubines! I will rule..er...well.,..nevermind... [ 10-04-2002, 11:37 AM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ]

I didn’t think Jar Jar was very annoying and yes Britney Spears should now be hunted down and killed.
And what is this bagging of Rage Against the Machine?! The Matrix has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard (surpassed only by the Dragonball Z movie Lord Slug) and it would be realized of the music couldn’t be heard over the continuous GUNFIRE! Another thing- I typed Britney Spears into Microsoft Word and deliberately spelt it wrongly and it corrected it! What is MW doing with that blasphemus name in its "correct spelling" thingy?
