I really think that people have gotten a bit overly sensitive on the "getting a topic off topic" thing. If you look at the normal evolution of a conversation with someone, I am sure that you at some point have thought, "how did we get around to talking about this?" The human brain associates various information to other information. I think that is the nature and beauty of conversation.

As much as topics are debated in this forum, I have not seen anyone applying or practicing the formal rules of debate. I, for one, do not even know what they are except to know that we aren't doing that. I guess if you want to have formal debates you should go to Pandemonium.

Anyway, any topic elicits differing associations in different individuals. The person who makes the post apparently sees a connection there. In my opinion, "off topic" would be in a "war thread" posting about the date you had Saturday night or your favorite recipe for fudge. That is off-topic and shouldn't go on.

But I think everyone, in general, has gotten way too sensitive about this. Besides, I think the originator of a topic should be the one to express irritation if they feel their thread has gone off topic.

Just my thoughts on the topic.

What is a West ham? It's a poor mans leyton orient. Does that clear things up?

Reeka you put foreword a good point that the originator of the thread should be the one to call the topic back into line. But sometimes I have been reading a thread and have got very annoyed when someone takes it wildly off topic, hey I’ve even been slapped by Ziroc for doing that so I don't know what the rules should be. Maybe there should be one rule for this specific forum and let general discussion threads flow freely?

I recently offered to start a new topic when a discussion on this forum touched on Northern Ireland something that I thought would be taken up on. But your good friend Barden was the only other person to post in the General forum. So maybe that was a good call to stop the topic getting derailed, as currently no one else seemed too interested.

Lanesra, who or what is West ham?
LOL, humor was lost on you I suppose.

Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree with you, although I do feel annoyed when a thread goes off topic one should not be so anal about it. If someone has derailed a thread you were interested in, just get it back on track by talking about the original topic at hand.
