A US commander has admitted that American troops did shoot and kill a number of Iraqis during a protest in the northern city of Mosul.

A BBC correspondent in the city says Mosul is extremely tense - and latest reports from there say at least three people have been killed and several others wounded by gunfire.

The French news agency quotes an Iraqi police officer as saying the police fired into the air to disperse looters who were trying to rob a bank.

Eyewitnesses said US troops then fired on a crowd close to the building from nearby rooftops.

That is not what I read, as the article doesn't say what exactly happened. The troops obviously thought they were being fired at but I don't think they killed anyone with a gun, it doesn't say gun fire came from the crowd. But believe what you will.

From a fox new's article

"At a Central Command briefing Wednesday, Brooks said U.S. forces were trying to secure the compound when the crowd began throwing rocks at Marines, hitting them with fists, spitting at them and setting cars on fire.

He said some of the Americans fired back after shots were fired at them and also shot at people in the crowd who tried to climb over the wall into the compound in a coordinated "assault."

That is what I heard. As far as I know it is still under investigation

Mordenhiem - a good tip when posting supporting evidence for your arguments is to try and find a "non-FOX" source. I am not saying that they are right or wrong in this instance, but it could add a whole lot of credibility to your case Heavens knows there must be some right wingers of the world that are prepared to swallow everything FOX tells them - many people around the world though are waking up and smelling the roses .

It amazes me how Fox can not be supported. They report news. It does not take BBC to tell me what centcom said. Fox can do that just fine. Are you saying they are making up what centcom said?

LOL Mordenheim,
Didn't you know that Fox News has a look-alike for Brig. Gen Brooks that they show in place of the Centcom briefings every morning in order to insure that we all get a dose of "the real truth the way Fox wants it shown"?

Let's not even touch their embedded reporters with the live video feeds with the audio to go with it, the audio that tells us what is happening while we are watching it...the same video that every other news station seems to get their hands on somehow but without the audio so that they can roll it in loops and guess what is going on, never getting close to what actually happened.

Did you by any chance catch the CNN reporters "on the scene" in Tikrit a few days ago?
"There are no republican guard anywhere!"
*camera pans around empty desert"
"There are no Fedayeen!"
"camera pans around empty desert"
"Oh, there's a checkpoint!"
*camera pans to front, indeed they are approaching an armed checkpoint*
*They attempt to blow the checkpoint*
*gunfire*
"We're under fire! We're under fire!"
*continue speeding past the gunfire aimed at them (Hello...for blowing the checkpoint maybe?) *
"Tikrit is NOT safe! Tikrit is NOT safe!"
*end of broadcast*

This is not made up, I saw it with my own eyes on CNN...when I told my room mate about it (he was in the next room on his PC) he said "Then it's really true?! I am sitting here reading about it right now on DU and I can't believe people would be so f**king stupid!"

Believe it...

EDIT: Sorry for spelling Brig. Gen Brooks name wrong...I'd also like to add, Davros, that I watched the Centcom briefing this morning and what Mordenheim related to the story is what he said (unless that was his Fox double, who also made an appearance on CNN, the station I watched it on.*snicker*) (Fox usually interrupts the briefing minutes before it is over if you are wondering why I would dare turn my channel to CNN)

The story has been updated. It seems that now Saddam has gone, the 'coalition' is no longer wanted. Duh! Even I predicted that one...:

US admits Mosul killings
A US commander has admitted that American troops did shoot and kill a number of Iraqis during a protest in the northern city of Mosul.
Brigadier-General Vince Brooks said US marines and special forces soldiers fired at demonstrators on Tuesday after they came under attack from people shooting guns and throwing rocks.

"Fire was indeed delivered from coalition forces, it was lethal fire and some Iraqis were killed as a result, we think the number is in the order of seven and we think there were some wounded as well," he said.

A BBC correspondent in the city says Mosul is extremely tense.

There was further gunfire on Wednesday with at least three people killed and around 17 wounded, hospital officials said.

Police reportedly fired into the air to disperse looters who were trying to rob a bank.

Eyewitnesses said US troops then fired on a crowd close to the building from nearby rooftops.

However, one marine told the Associated Press news agency the troops were responding to fire from a building across a park.

Conflicting claims

US forces had earlier denied responsibility for the killings on Tuesday.

Witnesses said US troops fired into a crowd growing increasingly hostile to a speech being given by the town's newly appointed governor.

A US spokesman said troops were returning fire from a nearby building and did not aim into the crowd.

The incident underlines the difficulties US forces face in trying to keep the peace in a country now confronting an uncertain future.

Some reports suggest up to 15 people were killed in Mosul, with between 60 and 100 people injured.

The trouble began as an angry crowd gathered outside the governor's building, demanding that Kurdish peshmerga fighters and Americans leave the city, witnesses told the BBC.

Mosul's new governor, Mashaan al-Juburi, appears to have tried to pacify the crowd.

Some witnesses said the US troops then began shooting after children threw stones, others that the first firing was not from American weapons.
