What if we go to war with Iraq, and North Korea decides that is the time to bomb the West Coast?
I am more worried about North Korea than Iraq.

Well if North Korea tried that, their missile would land someplace west of Hawaii, in the mean time, while it was still in boost phase, the US war ships in the region would probably anihilate every palace known to exist in North Korea. The reason all of europe is pissed at the USA for not siging the "no land mine" accords is because the US wanted a waiver for the border between North and south Korea. North Korea can't get to south Korea without walking through several million land mines. In the mean time US air and sea power would anihilate the Korean airforce and anti-air defense systems just like in Iraq....at which time China would problay reign in North Korea since they are the ones who really can dictate to the North Koreans
Thats my fantasy |

To make a long story short, that would be the end of North Korea. And i'm pretty sure they know that too.

From what I understand, they actually have missles to deliver warheads to California. And the propaganda in the country is that the US is provoking a war with them. Unlike the Iraqis, they are very loyal to thier leader and are much more of a force to be reckoned with than the Iraqis. They have a bigger army and are much more cohesive as a unit.
I don't believe that we will be able to "wipe them out" as easily as Iraq. I know that they want our attention very badly - and we have stopped sending food and aid. They are getting desperate. A desperate country is a dangerous one. They ALREADY have nuclear weapons and we know about them. Why is the UN doing nothing? (Because that is all they do.) And I do believe China is a buffer. But how effective are they going to be if the threat is ONLY in our direction?

Did you all see this?
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.j...toryID=2363209 Notice what Rumsfeld said late last week in that article! Wonder if we might be planning to take up our landmines?

What's really odd is that there doesn't seem to be much coming out from China and Russia on the NK issue.
You would think the Chinese govt have a huge stake in what happens to NK. They just seem awfully quiet. If NK wants economic aid, why are they pestering the US for it? Shouldn't they be asking the Russians or China for food assistance? The NK armies wouldn't get very far. I think US air assets would pretty much destroy anything that moves from the DMZ line. A B-52, despite its age, is still very good a destroying a mechanized force. [ 03-11-2003, 07:13 PM: Message edited by: Wutang ]

Are you serious about asking the Chinese and Russians for aid ? We're talking about money you know, and i'm not too sure about China, but money is one thing the Russians haven't seen in a long long time. They're in need of aid themselves. The cold war bled them dry, and they never recovered from that.

Charean, NK has missiles that are theoretically capable of reaching the West Coast of the US, but those missiles have never been successfully tested at any significant range.
Also, NK is not thought to actually have a nuclear weapon at this time. They are thought to be months, maybe only weeks, away from developing. They are definitely a threat, but the US isn't ignoring a threat of a nuke hitting the West Coast. NK just can't do it now. Maybe in the future, but not now.. ![]()

The US provides billions in economic aid to the Russians. Not really humanitarian aid, but we need to be sure their nuclear stockpile is guarded by soldiers who have boots, etc.... ![]() China has never been cash heavy, but they do provide NK with a large amount of food every year.

NK is blowing smoke up everybody's shorts, They got squat and are starving their people to death. One of the best ways to get the people's attention off the trouble they are in in to divert their attention. Wala the USA is going to attack us. If NK had nukes they would test then and show the world, HEY we got nukes and can play in the "big leagues" now. The reason they kicked out the Nuke inspector is because they don't have nukes yet and couldn't make any with the Nuke inspectors looking over their shoulders. Long range missle they may have some that on paper that can reach the USA, but the real world is differant then on paper. NK is scared they will be next after Iraq, personaly I think we should pull back from the DMZ and let SK go north.
