I found this article Bush & God on the MSN website a few days ago. It gives a very "in-depth" look at President Bush's religious beliefs and how they are influencing his decisions as leader of our country. After reading this article, I was impressed with just how heavily the decision to go to War with Iraq is weighing on him. He most assuredly is not going off "half-cocked"..nor does he have a "gung-ho cowboy" attitude about it. He fully realizes the serious implications of his decision and he has not made it lightly. He has discussed the issue with his advisors and he has prayed for guidance in his decision making. At a recent breakfast he held with several religious leaders, he asked that they pray for him also. Interestingly enough, he didn't ask them to pray that he would be successful in Iraq - rather, he asked them to pray that God would grant him the wisdom to make the right decisions regarding all the different issues he faced.
The War on Iraq is not about oil, it is not about money, it is not about America showing how "big and tough" we are. It is about removing a very dangerous and unpredictable dictator from power. Peaceful methods have been tried, and have been proven ineffective. Saddam Hussein will never willingly give up his position. He also will never stop creating biological and chemical weapons - and he has proven that he is more than willing to use these horrific weapons against ANYBODY he considers an enemy. As for the argument that a war will force him to use these very weapons against us, that's a risk we have to take. I believe it is better to face the threat head-on (and possibly force Saddam's hand) rather than sit around and wait for these weapons to be used against us at a time and place of Hussein's choosing. Having said that, a friend of mine provided this link to a Slate article that outlines many of the concerns held by President Bush's opponents Bully Bush. I have to agree the article raises some very legitimate concerns. President Bush firmly and sincerely believes his decision to threaten (and possibly invade) Iraq is the right decision. He has not reached the decision lightly, so he is also not going to be easily swayed from the course he has chosen. That is good and bad both. It is good that our President is willing to stand up for what he believes in and pursue the course he feels is right, despite opposition to his decision. But it is bad, too, because of the damage it is doing to our international relations. Almost every country and world leader completely agrees that Saddam Hussein is a dangerous threat and should be removed. They just disagree on how that should be accomplished. Since it is blantantly obvious that "peaceful methods" will NOT work, President Bush is resolute in his determination to pursue more agressive methods. I agree with the decision to remove Saddam by force (if necessary), but I have to agree that it would behoove President Bush to also be more diplomatic in his dealings with the U.N. and other world leaders. Since they agree on the common goal, it would be worth the attempt to reach a "mutually agreeable" solution as to how to achieve this goal. It may be impossible to reach a consensus, but at least the effort would have been made.

From the Press Conference last night:
Q. As the nation is at odds over war, with many organizations like the Congressional Black Caucus pushing for continued diplomacy through the U.N., how is your faith guiding you? And what should you tell America or what should America do collectively as you instructed before 9/11? Should it pray? Because you're saying let's continue the war on terror. A. I appreciate that question a lot. First, for those who urge more diplomacy I would simply say that diplomacy hasn't worked. We've tried diplomacy for 12 years. Saddam Hussein hasn't disarmed, he's armed. And we live in a dangerous world. We live in new circumstances in our country. And I hope people remember the, I know they remember the tragedy of September the 11th, but I hope they understand the lesson of September the 11th. The lesson is that we're vulnerable to attack wherever it may occur. And we must take threats which gather overseas very seriously. We don't have to deal with them all militarily. But we must deal with them. And in the case of Iraq, it is now time for him to disarm for the sake of peace. If we have to use our troops we will. My faith sustains me. Because I pray daily. I pray for guidance and wisdom and strength. If we were to commit our troops, if we were to commit our troops, I would pray for their safety. And I would pray for the safety of innocent Iraqi lives as well. One thing that's really great about our country is there are thousands of people who pray for me - who I'll never see, be able to thank. But it's a humbling experience to think that people I will never have met have lifted me and my family up in prayer. And for that I'm grateful. That's, it's been, it's been a comforting feeling to know that is true. I pray for peace. I pray for peace x x x and in the name of freedom. Ann. |

Cerak,I watched him on tv the other night as well and I was always very anti Bush and doubted his intentions in Iraq but he did convince me as well that we need to do something soon and something very decisive and firm.I also believe he will invade only as a last resort but I now believe that is inevitable and as much as I dislike the thought of war we cannot back down,so I guess I will have to back him up on his actions .

Bush needs to lead by example and allow the UN to do their job. What's next, maybe N.Korea decides to invade Japan because they view Japan as a threat, or India invading Pakistan. Where does it stop? Bush does not rule the world.

The UN did determine what to do, Animal. Resolution 1441 authorized force by the US if Saddam continued to refuse to cooperate. In fact, I argue that everyday we delay the war is another day the US is recalcitrant in its duties as dictated by the Security Counsel.
